And they said that Federation ships rarely leave Federation space literally ten seconds before the opening credits says the mission was to boldly go where no one has gone before. Did the writers forget Federation ships going outside Federation space was the premise of the entire franchise?!

The relatively small amount of heavy cruiser and explorer ships venture outside of Federation territory, but the vast majority of ships, your smaller patrol vessels, cargo transports, medical ships, mining ships, construction ships, colony ships, passenger liners, comms relay ships, etc. rarely venture out of the safety of Federation claimed space or known and pacified shipping lanes without invitation or protection from a planetary government.

For a small and poorly armed Federation vessel to be wandering in unclaimed space alone would be unusual.

FWIW, on this one, the cavalier attitude/hammyness on the pirate/mutily/works every time plot bugged me a touch but on the other side, it didn't bug me at all, even though the actor pkaying Angel went super-big. I know for others, it was the other way around.

I was unhappy for a while with T'Pring and Spock behaving so human, kissing so much and cuddling in bed, when Vulcans are supposed to not go far beyond "it is agreeable to see you" and Sarek needing a Picard meld to even hold Perrin's hand.
But here T'Pring actually shows why this happens: She wants to appeal to Spock's human half. That's why she's so untypically kissy-flirty-fucky with him. There was a scene in a trailer we haven't seen yet, when one of them says: I believe it would be logical to kiss. That's the Vulcan way
I hope that wasn't cut, it would've made sense at the beginning of their scenes.

The Spock & Chapel kiss reminds me of the scene in Matrix 2 when Monica Belucci asks Neo to kiss her like he kisses Trinity. It takes 2 attempts, but he goes all in, convincing her, and making Trinity uncomfortable. And that kiss is apparently what fully ignited the flame that keeps burning in Chapel's heart throughout TOS. I love it when they add to established things with new backstory and explanations that not only make sense and fit, but elevate the known stuff and make it more meaningful (like why Sarek was so frustrated with Spock's decision to not join the VSA, as explained in Disco, or yes, like the Klingon virus background in ENT).

It's a good start, Trek has to make up for decades of not including LGBTQ people.

I have no problem with it but I hope it doesnt go into pandering territory. This ep was subtle like real life and doesnt make a big deal out of it like other shows. Angel had a purpose and story. Thems sexuality or gender was not what was a focus so it was natural and its more realistic. All in all a pretty good episode. I Iiked the story, the pirates, the humor etc. Really nice balance.

PIC in two years hasn't been as good as SNW in just a few episodes.

I really like SNW because I get a full story, lots of character building and can finish in an hour and ruminate about it right away. This is the best new trek show.

Given that Angel was seeking to rescue Sybok, it would make sense for her to operate in the general region where he was being held.

Vulcans have been spacefaring for well over 2,000 years, so it would make sense that they would have some pretty far flung colony worlds, even some that would technically be Federation "owned", as they are a member world, but might rest within unclaimed, non-aligned/neutral, or even non-pacified or antagonist space. It would also make sense that they would seek out planets with similar environmental conditions to Vulcan.

It's also not surprising that Vulcans would want to hide their problems like rebels and emotional criminal offenders away on some distant penal colony, as they don't want to encourage others to follow the rebel"s path, and Vulcan's can sometimes sense others or transmit their own thoughts and feelings without making physical contact, so the most powerful prisoners might be able to influence others from afar. Also, Vulcans are intensely prideful and embarrased by any displays of weakness or error, all claims otherwise notwithstanding. It would make sense for their prisoners to be hidden away from soceity on their own Alcatraz Island, Robben Island, Devil's Island, or Monte Christo.

Then there's the whole subspace highway theory, somewhat supported by TNG 'Force of Nature', whereby heavy warp traffic alters the fabric of subspace in that region. It eventually wears it down and damages it (until they found a solution) but in the meantime, that heavy traffic might also have the side benefit of increasing local warp and subspace communications speeds along heavily used shipping lanes. So an explorer out in largely unexplored and rarely traversed regions (or a remote Vulcan penal colony) might have slower than normal communications speeds than the core worlds and popular sites would. It's like speeds on city wifi versus some remote rural wifi.

The only explanation for Real Time Video conferencing with T'Pring, given the speed of standard Subspace communications was that the Vulcan Penal/Rehabilitation Colony was nearby the place of occurance where Angel stole the USS Enterprise.

Given the listed speed of Subspace communication and the amount of latency needed for real time video conferencing. The place that was holding Sybok should've been within < 1 ly nearby within the Federation Borders.

Spock was accurate on the assessment of Standard Subspace signals speed being ~52,000c.

I had that listed in my Warp Factor 3.0 Excel Spreadsheet Table / File.

That being said. If the signal would take 2 days to travel to SF HQ in San Francisco, then the USS Enterprise is ~285 ly away signal wise.

Given that the ITU recommends 150 ms latency for Real Time Voice communications and we're shown Real Time Video Conferencing. T'Pring's Penal/Rehabilitation colony would be ~ 0.000247494252882006 ly away.

Yeah, the elephant in the room here is that SNW has completely retconned Vulcan culture and physiology in terms of mating. There is literally no point to Pon Farr now, and since Spock can apparently bang T'Pring whenever, there should be no buildup of pent up energy or whatever that results in a 'mate or die' insanity every seven years. This is one aspect where SNW has kind of 'wrecked it' in terms of what was established.

This, absolutely. The creatives who map out these story lines have every right to tell whatever stories they want, but I think they do themselves, and the Vulcans, a deep disservice when they remove all the mystery and strangeness from Vulcan culture and biology. It transforms Vulcans into just humans with pointed ears, telepathic powers and a higher intellect, but no underlying "otherness" to make them distinctive from every other humanoid species. Vulcans in general, and Spock in particular, have always been, in my opinion, the most interesting Trek aliens. This waters them down so much that it makes them less interesting and maybe even a little bit boring if they have the same attitudes about mating as every other species. And I think it undermines the whole idea that their culture is fundamentally based on logic and the suppression of emotions. It means instead of actually suppressing their emotions they are simply painting a facade over them. Logic just becomes a superficial affectation instead of a dedicated way of life for them.

I mean, I can think of several times in just the past week I've used they/them as a gender-neutral pronoun when referring to a single person where I knew their gender and just wanted to be generic.

Why are so many of the anti-LGBTQ+ grunts so stuck up about the use of language all of the sudden?

ETA: Post-clarity. I fully support LGBTQ+ rights and speak against those hung up on not using the proper language when talking about people of transgender, non-Binary or other status. They/them have been gender neutral pronouns pretty much always. Those against LGBTQ+ persons and their rights are the ones upset because "suddenly" we're referring to a person of undeclared gender as "they/them." Sorry for any misunderstanding.

Maybe this is why the Vulcan’s evolved the need for Pon Farr? As Vulcan’s have repressed emotions which they only ‘observe’ and ‘shut out’, then perhaps they need this hormonal boost which takes seven years to build up in order to keep their species population from declining. This pent up hormonal and emotional energy can be ‘discharged’ when the Vulcan body clock is ready (every seven years). Of course, hormone and emotional imbalances may also come in to play and cause the Vulcan mating cycle to go ‘out of synch’. Maybe this is why Vulcan’s have arranged partners, it could be all about making sure that the two compatible Vulcan’s Pon Farr cycles are ‘synchronised’. Perhaps some Vulcan’s even go as far as to take stimulants to ‘induce’ Pon Farr if they really enjoy intimate relations and don’t want to wait seven years?

Romulan’s don’t Pon Farr though…
