I think single nacelles were explained in tech book by having double the normal amount of warp coils or something.

The US navy currently has a USS Nimitz and a USS Dwight D Eisenhower, one surname, one full name and they commissioned only a couple of years apart. There doesn't appear to be a standard form. Look at the list of Burke class destroyers:
    Arleigh Burke-class destroyer - Wikipedia

Also King is a common name and was indeed the name of the Chief of Naval Operations of the US Navy in WWII who has had a warship named after him that served from 1960-91. It follows that if Starfleet wanted to name a ship after the Civil Rights leader they would need to make it clear which "King" they meant. Archer is also a more recent individual in the 2250s and it may be more obvious to someone who the name referred to. Perhaps there have been other famous people called King between now and then and they weren't all as worthy.

Starfleet may have a contemporary ship named USS Martin Luther, so a longer name is needed to tell the two Marts apart.

Plus, Starfleet serves a multi-cultural nation - while using Earth-based ship names their practices may be based on Vulcan, Tellarite, Japanese, German, Aenar etc naming practises.

I believe at one point either Pike or Una (or La'an?) refer to the ship as just the 'King Jr.' as shorthand.

The least ambiguous thing to call it conversationally is the Doctor King.

That was just for the Galaxy class nacelles, and it was invented by Michael Okuda to explain the Freedom and Niagara classes which have odd numbered GCS nacelles. But really it was just a way to validate Roddenberry’s rules. The problem is that the ‘nacelle’ is the thing housing the warp coils, not the warp coils themselves. So it was just a bs justification.

Although never spoken in dialogue, one of the ships in the fleet scenes of season 2 was labelled "USS Uhura". In "Best of Both Worlds" there was a wreck labelled "USS Chekov" but no first names.

Nope, top speed was reduced to less than half, but the ship could still warp on one nacelle. And that performance penalty could have more to do with the ship being designed for two nacelles rather than the inherent performance penalty of using only one nacelle. I could pop both left tires on my car, but it won’t still drive as well as a motorcycle would on only two wheels (unless it’s Batman’s Tumbler).

Remember that one-nacelle ships predate Roddenberry's Rules of Starship Design, which exist for the sole reason to stop people buying Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Technical Manual and start buying new manuals where Roddenberry had more control (Joseph had licensed out his manual to create the Star Fleet Universe games) and probably got a bigger cut.

Why buy one when you can have two for twice the price?

Which I think nicely illustrates why it's better to use full names instead of just surnames, because is the USS Chekov named for Pavel the famous 23rd Century Federation Starfleet officer, or is it named for Anton the famous 19th Century Russian playwright? (Yes, yes, I know Anton's surname is usually transliterated with an "h," but I think the point stands.)

Actually it was because GR wanted to show one in TMP: but FJ wanted a royalty fee - and thats when GR found out the deal FJ made, and that yes, FJ would be due a fee...

Thus the "all ships require TWO Nacelles to Warp..." was born. (Per GR decree).

They still kept the audio references to 'Scouts' in TMP, complete with 3 digit registry numbers.

the same way the navy had submarine named USS City of Corpus Christi. Initially it was going to be the USS Corpus Christi, but it was felt the USS Body of Christ might be offensive to some.

But (and I may have forgotten) didn't they use images from the technical manual in TMP, anyway? I know they did in TWOK.

I used to have a copy of the script for "The Best of Both Worlds part two" that I bought from the Lincoln Enterprises table set up at a Creation Con Majel was the guest for around early 1993. IIRC, the script spelled it Chekhov, like the Russian playwright. (Of course, it could've been a typo on Piller's part . . . if my memory is accurate.)

Yes they did. The scene where V'Ger's "plasma probe" access the Enterprise computer, some of those images I think are from that technical manual.

I think it was from the deck plans, actually. I remember one cross-section image of the ship that didn't appear in the technical manual.

NBC/Paramount made the exclusive deal with Franz Joseph without Gene knowing.

Though he didn't really have any say about licensing at that point anyway, since he had walked away from the show and his NBC third season contract in a huff back in 1968.

Paramount ended up paying FJ after the fact for the images used in TMP.
(which is also why the same ones could be used in TWoK)

I forgot to ad that FJ had actually approached Roddenberry about publishing the manual & blueprints back in 1973 for Majel's Lincoln Enterprises Co.
(even though Bjo Trimble & her husband ran it)
That's when it was discovered that Gene didn't own the rights to Trek merchandising.
(there was a bit of a hubbub about that also)

So FJ approached NBC/Paramount and got the exclusive deal.
This is what caused Gene to go all Hellbent on cutting the Manual & Blueprints out of the Trek mythos.

So technically, both are actually still a part of the universe, since Roddenberry didn't really have the rights to eliminate them.

I did not. Did it look like it came out of a Colonial Viper or something?
