Why should they be offended?

At least some Ukrainians who have seen the episode feel that by using footage of their people being shot at in their struggle for national liberation to represent anonymous for entertainment, "Strange New Worlds" is disrespecting the pain and suffering the Ukrainian people are going through.

Other Ukrainians may disagree.

The former opinion is not unreasonable even if I don't agree with it. I can see where someone who's living through a genocidal war might not want to see footage of their struggle used to represent rando aliens for foreigners' amusement.

And "City on the Edge of Forever" had at least some controversial pieces of stock footage playing in the historical review in the Guardian's doorway. Mussolini may have been one of the visible figures that Kirk, his officers and the 1967 audience saw.

And I would not think it unreasonable if a survivor of those bombings was upset by "Battlefield"'s use of that footage. I don't agree with that opinion, but I can sympathize and don't think it's unreasonable to feel that way.

Yeah, I haven't follow Trek novels that closely but I was wondering if they did the pilot episodes.

"Broken Bow" was the last time an ST series premiere was made into a novel. ENT's "The Expanse" was the last time an ST episode was novelized, and Star Trek Into Darkness was the last time any ST production was novelized, period.

Novelizations of TV episodes and films are on the decline these days, though; they're generally less popular in this era of streaming and DVD/BluRay box sets. It's my understanding the only reason ST09 and Into Darkness even had novelizations is that Abrams, Kurtzman, and/or Orci were big fans of the novelist, Alan Dean Foster.

I don't know... for all the nostalgia they cram down our throats we might as well see the incident that led the Federation and Starfleet to the conclusion that ending all life on a planet was a viable solution to a situation.
