Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

so they could've kept the original shape, which is the point here. who do you think is trying to fool anyone, and why?
What made you think anyone here was talking about the shape of the ship?

It's about a number of things, not just the shape of the model.

Moreover, I think it is clear from SNW that paramount did not do that or even care or try.
No, actually, they are following through with what Trek has always done: recast. It has nothing to do with apathy or lack of trying. Trek has always updated the look, and actors, as it demands it. It isn't Star Wars, Bond, or any other TV show that insists on keeping a certain look beyond the basics of colored uniforms, phasers, starships, transporters and tricorders. Everything else, everything, is set dressing.

Only the fans make a mountain out of this microbe. Star Trek III must have been hell.

Because virtually no one has a problem with changing the look of the hull plating and adding glowing to spots. The point of contention is the shape of the ship, most obviously the nacelle pylons.

Do they also have a problem with the slightly different uniforms, sets, props, etc.? Or is it just the precise dimensions and shapes of the Enterprise parts?

The extreme protectionism and gatekeeping about the shape of 1701 is ridiculous.

A lot of the reviewers have gone out of their way to crap on the Kirk character to embiggen Pike, who doesn't really need embiggening, basing their portrayal of Kirk on the rulebreaking fratboy caricature of pop culture myth and Chris Pine's portrayal rather than the actual character Shatner portrayed onscreen in TOS.

It's the typical lazy hot-take framing of barely-informed media reporting.

TOS Kirk is smart, levelheaded, reasonable, thoughtful, and has leadership qualities.

That JJ Kirk was portrayed as an immature reckless jerk is one of my top reason why I don't like the Kelvin timeline movies.
JJ Kirk behaved more like Sam Witwicky from Michael Bay's Transformers (written by Alex Kurtzman) than TOS Kirk.

This was the beginning when Star Trek characters didn't behave like Star Trek characters.
Immature. Unprofessional.

This culminated in Discovery and Picard characters.
Looking at SNW trailers and teasers this is still an ongoing trend.

The immaturity and unprofessionalism of Discovery characters are different than the immaturity and unprofessionalism of Kelvin timeline characters.
Discovery charters are hyperemotional (-> crying).
Kelvin timeline characters are stupid and reckless (-> mindless action).

With Strange New Worlds we will get more sassy and snarky dialogues and mindless pew pew action.

Despite seeing it for years now this hyper levels of nitpicking details amaze me still.

I wonder how TMP went over?

They just justify it by saying that it takes place after TOS.

If you meant at the time. I remember one reviewer complaining that the Klingons were changed for the sake of change and Gene shouldn't have done it.

I was speaking about the response at the time. But, it also amazes me what is the limit for rationalizing away.

CNN published a review of the season premiere of Strange New Worlds and called it a "reboot".
Interesting that this is what the reviewer thought of it.
They have since changed the title.

Akiva Goldsman doesn't know Kirk and Star Trek.

CNN also has used FAN FILM footage, and referenced it as Paramount Star Trek footage in a story talking about Paramount's plan for Star trek (and that's happened more than once.) There are plenty of causal entertainment reporters who don't research there references in their stories very well.

Years ago there was fan art of mine of Luke Cage used on MTV news when the character had been optioned as a Tyrese movie. Being the first Google image result has a lot of power.

look at the commonly stated criticism of the discoprise and find out that it's mostly about pylons, secondary hull shape, and compressed neck. find posts that don't criticize those parts, but hull texture instead. one is the vast majority, the other is not.

what exactly is wrong about the fact that the refit, which is explicitly mentioned and part of the story, happens after TOS?

Because they auditioned and they liked them?
Ah, so that's why Urban doesn't play Kirk, Pine doesn't play Spock, and Quinto doesn't play Scotty? Good to know! :p

That's a pretty slick trick you just tried to pull. The argument for the change isn't about the shape. Here you're talking about arguments against it.
