Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Both Discovery and Picard have gone for a very dark look in both set design, costumes, and space scenes. Goldsman wasn't in charge of the look of either of those shows.

Is it really next week SNW debuts?? So it’ll coincide with the season finale of PIC?
I’m genuinely so excited for this. More than I was for any of the other shows.

I was this excited about TNG, but felt a good deal more trepidation about it based on what we were seeing and hearing before the premiere.

I wasn't excited at all about TOS. "What is this?" I wondered as I tried to figure out the beginning minutes of "The Man Trap."

Oh man, I can’t imagine what it must have been like watching those shows for the very first time. Especially TOS back in the 60’s. I often felt like I was born in the wrong era.

Yes! Both will be on the same day :)

Genuinely can’t wait. The Trek shows come out on the day of the week I get chemotherapy. It’s almost like a reward from the universe and takes the edge off feeling shitty afterward.

Well, good for him.

I think the bigger question is why is this an issue? Multiples of the same ships strikes as the most nonissue thing out there for Starfleet.

It's lazy producing.

It would be one thing if this was the 1960s, and they had to do copy/paste because they couldn't afford to do better, but the current art department could have done a proper, mixed fleet in an afternoon.

It's unprecedented, unsatisfying and it pulls people out of the story when they think about it for a second and realise it must be due to real world production issues.
Unprecedented? With due respect, no. I grew up with fleets of Constitution ships in TOS.

Unsatisfying? Well, mileage will vary. Ships are ships.

And think about it for a second? I didn't. It was a fleet of ships as a show of force. Made perfect sense in context.

Oh, please. Everything costs money. You don't get to do it at your leisure because productions have deadlines. It works fine in context.

See my reply above.

I have to give you this one. I was searching my brain looking for any example and I completely forgot the Ultimate Computer. Still, that was only a tiny fleet and larger fleets are always more mixed.

Ok, but it makes sense in context of the story too. Starfleet had suffered crippling losses, both from the Dominion War and then the Mars attack. Creating a singular platform that can be used for force projection in a time of need makes perfect sense. Heck, I've imagine several such fleets for multiple different properties.

Drexler saying the producers thought no one would notice seems to be his opinion, not him saying a producer/exec/vfx person told him no one will notice like was stated earlier in this thread.
It also adds nothing. The reality was production limits. If Ultimate Computer is acceptable then I will stand by the idea that this fleet is acceptable.

5 matching ships called together specifically for war games is not the same thing as an emergency fleet.
An emergency fleet is something I would want as uniform as possible. And it's about force projection, the ability of Starfleet to defend this new protectorate. So bringing their might to bear, rather than a mixed fleet, makes way more sense. It's like Starfleet actually learned something from the Borg attacks.
