Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

The same people who are being trusted with this are the ones who told Doug Drexler that "no one will even notice" (direct quote" from a conversation with me by DM) the copypasta Starfleet from Picard season one. It's not that they are incompetent, it's that they just don't give a frak.

1) You gonna share a screencap of that private conversation, or do you only share things told to you in confidence when it means you get to insult people whose TV shows you don't like?

2) How the fuck would Doug Drexler know? He didn't work on PIC S1.

3) The showrunner for PIC S1 was Michael Chabon. The showrunner for SNW is Akiva Goldsman. They're not "the same people."

Which mildly annoyed me since in the novels had a very different family, where Pike was adopted.

I think the idea that Pike was adopted fits the version of Pike from "The Cage" better than the version of Pike that Mount has been playing though. Jeffrey Hunter's Pike is this melancholy soul who feels alienated from everyone in his life and lonely. Mount's Pike is a more well-adjusted, charismatic leader with a stronger emotional connection to the people around him.

I don't like the Tricorder, it feels less advanced than Discovery's, same with the communicator.

They look good as TOS era creations, don't get me wrong but they feel like a step backwards compared to Discovery's props.

These poor people can't win for trying.

if that's them ''trying'' then they shouldn't have tried

Why? What is it that you consider good by comparison?

The communicator and phaser are vastly better than the STD props, which were one of the best pieces of design work associated with that series. The tricorder? Not so much, but it's still pretty good.

Honestly, the extent to which nothing on this show really looks much like STD just thrills me no end. I'd have been satisfied, I guess, if they'd had to do this show by recycling the props and costumes and designs from the previous show, but they've done so much better than that. It's kind of hard to look at the clips of the Enterprise on that series without feeling, among other things, some pity for the actors having to work in those costumes all day.

The DISCO phaser is a wartime phaser. The SNW one is for peacetime.

Pretty meaningless distinction when you're talking about hand-held gadgets that can disintegrate solid walls.

The STD phaser, was, in fact, a design based on combining the phaser from "The Cage" and the production phaser props used throughout TOS. It was a nice fusion, as was the combination of the TOS and TWOK communicators.

Me: I was making a little joke, sir.
Serveaux: Extremely little, Ensign.

Oh, it's so hard for an old man to tell, when the conversation gets into the nerdy weeds. Some people are very literal.
Oh, I understand. I'm old too. I was remarking more on the aesthetics than the function. The DISCO phaser is rugged looking. The SNW phaser is sleek and sexy, something you could imagine for a "kinder, gentler" Starfleet. The purpose and function's the same, but the optics are different.

It's amazing how they knock the smaller props out of the stadium and have so many difficulties with larger things like set design and lighting quality. Thankfully SNW seems to have corrected some of those issues.

As Sci said, no matter what they do, people will complain vociferously. If they don't do new Trek, fans will complain. If they do, fans will complain that it's too similar, or too different, or that it doesn't meet their unreasonable expectations one way or another.

It's the same stuff we get from SW fans and several other fandoms. I do mention things I don't like, but I try to just sit back and enjoy.

They've done a fantastic design job so far. I just wish they had put the Enterprise back in the configuration that Eaves had come up with before they messed with it. A lighter shade of gray and straight pylons are, in my opinion, a better fit for this design, along with the other slight adjustments.

Mark Bell did a fantastic render of that version not long ago.
