I’d sign up to survey a newly discovered M-class planet. I’ll get to name all of the mountains, rivers, oceans, canyons, continents, and seas, and all of the life forms.

I'm pretty sure Federation policy permits limited engineering, such as curing congenital issues like Downs Syndrome, autism, or sickle cell anemia. You just can't create augmented superpeople.
I'd want to work in the Cargo Bay and drive the space forklift. It was probably me that forgot to tie up those barrels that fell on Worf and broke his spinal cord. Crap, the Captain's really busting my ass for that screwup. Guess it's back to Mars to work with the Synths now.

Probably not. Think about all you can do and the freedom available, I wouldn't want to spend years training to work on a starship. I'd probably wanna stay on Earth, it is a paradise where you can do pretty much anything to varying degrees of success. You could become a holo novel developer or a semi professional sports person. Could spend your time cooking and perfecting your craft. There is so much you could do in a post-scarcity society of that scale.
I always assumed that Wesley was struggling because he tried to get in a few years early, but judging by the apparent age of his competitors in Coming of age he really wasn't. Except of course if all these four were an exceptionally brilliant peer group- perhaps in that case they didn't struggle for an ordinary position but for a 'gifted' program within Starfleet?
If I parallel my life to a future version of myself, then I would have applied and failed to get into Starfleet Academy, then went to college, got an engineering degree and eventually got a job building the photon torpedo warheads for Starfleet vessels.
Who needs either when you live in a society that provides you with what you need to ensure high quality of life? We generate abundance just like Trek humans do... except we prohibit access to this abundance via money and 'working for a living'... they don't.
I would not. The reasons are - star fleet demands 100% of you- it consumes your whole private life - you can have a relationship and family only if they commit their lives to Star fleet as well - rising to the top needs you to be 100% focused- I think I am not dumb but I am not an over-achiever. I am the „lowest resistance path“ kind of guy and I think I would not get far with this - I actually have a problem with military chains of command , when I cannot be sure that every person is 100% pure dedicated to the actual goal. I think in reality every person would secretly follow a personal agenda
What Bashir actually said was: Starfleet Medical won't see it that way. DNA resequencing for any reason other than repairing serious birth defects is illegal. Any genetically enhanced human being is barred from serving in Starfleet or practicing medicine. Given the above, I'd say that sickle cell anemia is a possibility (as that can be fatal quite easily), however as autism and Down's are rarely fatal inherently (although there are some health management challenges currently particularly for the latter) IMO it's less likely to be widely available legally.
