Would you give your child a trekkie name?

Where does the name "Jadzia" come from? I think I'm correct in saying it is a "Trek" name as much as "Spock" or "Seven". However, I think it's a beautiful name and may be persuaded to alter my mind from my original post by this one.
Jadzia is a Polish name.

Anyway, he is in the process of changing his middle name to Tiberius and even though some of you may gag....it makes this mom very happy and very proud. Hey, he's 25, is a UVA graduate, holds an GREAT job, and is a wonderful young man. I think he's awesome and as Spock's mom would say, "I'm a proud mother!"

I think that's really sweet. :) It sounds like you guys have a great relationship.

If I have a daughter, I've seriously thought about the name Miriam...primarily as a tribute to my grandma, but also so as to be able to call her by the nickname Miri. :)

Really? Thanks for that. I have travelled quite widely in Poland and never come across it. I think I have a name for my first daughter, if she ever comes along.

I have actually always wanted to name a future son "Miles." While it's true that I fell in love with the name because of Star Trek, that wouldn't be the only reason... it's a strong name that means "soldier" or "servant."

Depends on the name I suppose. The main ones that come to mind are Kira, Ezri, Jadzia. Even Nerys would be an option in my opinion. But then, I like unique names. I have two girls now, one is Kiara (pretty close to Kira, but her mother actually picked that one for an unrelated reason.) And the younger daughter is named Aliena Daemona, (long story on that one, and people still give me flack for it.)

I couldn't see spock, spork, spick, or any of the names like that, but some of the trek names actually sound nice in my opinion.

Honestly, I've debated this topic for a while. My sister was named after "Elizabeth"-Walton's on television- and it's bothered her ever since she found out. It's a VERY common name, so she tells people she was named after Elizabeth of the Bible instead.

But her problem was that she was named after a whiny, witless little girl. If someone were to choose a name from Star Trek like "Kira" or "Annika" (known more commonly by her Borg designation of Seven of Nine), at least they would be named after strong, vibrant, vivacious women, women who could stand their ground and kick your butt if necessary.

So if I were to choose girls and boys names from Star Trek that I would honestly love for my child for their meaning and for their namesake, I would choose: (and please note that these are the choices I like. There are other, very good choices as well.)

Girls:
Deanna
Tasha
Kira
Annika
Kathryn

Boys:
James
Luke (Jean Luc)
William
Jordi (maybe short for Jordan)
Thomas
Tucker

And Jadzia, according to websites about name origins, is a form of Jadwiga, which is of Germanic origin (Hedwig) and means "battle" or "(female) warrior". Quite fitting. Worf would be glad. :klingon: :techman:

Tasha and Luke are good. but not serious about it. as it depends on both me and my hubby's decision.

Aw, thanks! We do now and it is the greatest gift to me (our relationship). Even my 16 yr old daughter is getting there....(have you ever had a teenage daughter? OY!)

I LOVE the idea of Miriam/Miri!!!!!!

When my daughter was little her nickname was "Little one" (as in Lwaxana and Deanna). But when she hit double digits she refused to allow us to call her that anymore. *sigh*

I would consider naming a son James for lots of reasons BUT.. if I did so his middle name would have to be Tiberius. That's just the way it is. Kind of take it or leave it, LOL.

I have to add that I do think it's an essentially fraught idea even though I would seriously consider both Ezri and Tiberius (middle). I have known a few people who were named after some movie character or book character and they were always very eye rolling about their mom's silliness in doing that. They didn't get what the attraction was because as someone said earlier in the thread it was their parent's hobby (or crush, or fave film or..) not theirs. So IMHO the chance of them not being exactly thrilled with being named after a Trek character is pretty high.

My cousin married a Star Wars fan and was talked into naming her first born son Luke. But when her daughter came around she flat out refused naming the kid "Leia." (I wish I was joking but I'm not!)
I don't blame her - if she'd had a third child, the obvious choice for a name would have been "Chewbacca." :guffaw:

I knew a guy in college whose first name was Tarl. He got very embarrassed if he introduced himself and the other person started to snicker - he admitted that yeah, his parents were fans of the Gor novels...

I wonder if anybody ever named their daughter "T'Pring"? Even though the character was not a nice person, it's still a pretty name.
