Who should be the villain in MCU spider-man?

Doctorwhovian

Fleet Captain
With the franchise being rebooted as part of the MCU, who should be the bad guy? The first two Raimi films of course used Spider-man's big bads, the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus, but ended up killing both in the end. The third film spared Sandman-and gave him more backstory, but gave us sort of a 'meh' Venom and the Harry Osborn retread of the goblin.

The Amazing series gave us the Lizard (Who 'sort of' appeared in the Raimi films as his alter ego Curt Conners, played by Dylan Baker.) But then we got another Goblin (although Harry this time instead of his father), a somewhat odd take on Electro and about a minute of Rhino. Then of course the "Sinister Six"-including Dr. Octopus-were teased at the end, although via their equipment only (Although it's possible Electro, Goblin and Rhino would've joined).

Maybe they can do a villain who hasn't been in a Spider-man film before. Carnage might be a possibility, although he's kind of tied to Venom and the character might not work out in a PG-13 film, being a serial killer and all.

Kingpin, although he debuted in Spider-man comics and was a prominent villain in some animated incarnations, is in the Daredevil series (Played by Vincent D' Onfrio) but I think that's being targeted at older audiences too.

I can see Scorpion perhaps (A guy who wears a suit of scorpion-like armor, and developed in part by J. Jonah Jameson to his regret) or the Spider-slayers (Also developed in part by Jameson).

Vulture of course was almost the villain in the never made fourth Raimi movie (I think Jon Malcohvich was going to play him). Although the villain in the comics is a bit silly-most of the time, an elderly man in a flying vulture costume-perhaps we can have a connection to the same technology the Falcon uses.

Any other thoughts/ideas?

I'd love to see a much better adaptation of the Venom storyline, honestly. I'm not the biggest fan of Spider-Man (I haven't even seen either of the Andrew Garfield movies yet), but that was always my favorite plot when I was a kid watching the FOX cartoon.

Or maybe that crazy story with all the Alternate Universe Spider-Men!

Can you (or someone) explain the way the ownership works. As I understand it, Spider-man the character is owned by Marvel comics (but not Marvel movies) and the film rights are owned by Sony (is that right?) hence the reason why Sony aren't keen for Spider-man to be incorporated into the Marvel (movie) universe

??

The whole X-men thing comes into this too, right? (Owned by Fox?) Quicksilver is in that universe but also in the Marvel universe

Also didn't Paul Giamatti film scenes as Rhino in preparation for the third amazing film?

??

Confused

As for a villain for the new film, isn't Swarm an ex Nazi so he'd have reason to work with Hydra (I'd also love to see Firestar turn up at some point again but she isn't owned by Marvel??......sigh)

^ Sony gets to keep the Spider-Man movie rights for as long as they continue to make Spider-Man movies. But now they've decided that rather than continuing their "Amazing Spider-Man" series, they'd be better off enlisting the Marvel Studios people to reboot Spider-Man again as part of the MCU and the Avengers franchise.

From what I understand, Marvel/Disney isn't going to make any money from these new Spider-Man movies, and Sony's not getting anything for having "their" new Spider-Man appear in other MCU movies.

I don't know. Doc Ock's his best villain, and I'd like to see a more faithful version on screen, but SM2 is so beloved by everyone I feel like they'll leave him be.

I think everyone knows not to do Goblins again for the fourth time.

The Jackal would be an interesting one, but I feel like you don't do clones until a sequel.

Mysterio? Unlike most of Spidey's rogues, he's probably got just enough menace to carry a film.

Kraven the Hunter could be a good one. Certainly would be a change from the mad science-fueled baddies of all the other films.

I feel like they'll probably go with Venom again though, hopefully better than last time.

Is there no Spider-Man thread? I don't think the villain by itself needs its own thread. I want someone I haven't seen before: Vulture, Kraven, and Mysterio come to mind the most.

I could see Vulture and Silvermane together (sort of a battle of old people), but it also gives high flying stunts mixed with street level crime.

I'm probably in a minority here, but I think most of the 'classic' Spider Man villains are pretty crap. Doc Ock's O.K. but I'd rather not see Vulture, Lizard and co.

Venom or Carnage could be good.

Kraven would be good. or maybe someone completely out of left field like Crime Master. i'd use the Brant version, that way you could do something with Betty other than just have her be in one or two scenes as a secretary.

I'm always eager for Mysterio, Chameleon or maybe Kraven but I suspect they'll use Doc Ock again.

If they eventually wanted to setup an MCU verson of H.A.M.M.E.R or Thunderbolts maybe even Norman Osborn but hopefully not retread what's been done already.

Venom done right. The scorpion, Hobgoblin.

I think having another marvel hero try to track down spider-man over a misunderstanding of the character would be an interesting route like the Punisher in the animated series.

I wouldn't want him to be the initial villain, but at some point I'd like to see them introduce Morbius. Maybe use that as an opportunity to introduce the MCU version of Blade, while they're at it.

They need to look at Greg Weismann's Spectacular Spider-man cartoon and use it as a template. It had a great explanation for the super-villains: the mob fed "off the books" money and "volunteers" to Norman Osborn so that he could perform illegal research and experiments; in return the mob requested that Norman release the stuff into the public so that it could distract Spider-man from busting up normal mob business.

A few choices that haven't been seen in the movies yet-- Kraven, Scorpion, Mysterio, Vulture.

Is there no Spider-Man thread?

I thought about it the other day when the "news" that Drew Goddard would be writing and directing the next Spider-Man movie broke, but I decided to wait for confirmation. And I'm glad I did, as it proved to be false. I think I'll do it anyway, just without the Goddard lead-in.

^ Where did you hear that the Drew Goddard rumor was false? It hasn't been officially confirmed, but I haven't seen any outright denials, either.
