Watched it a 3rd time -- it's great!!

And there are years of entertaining posts about how people have the right to troll people who like the film, or simply complain for the sake of complaining... Comparing those apples to oranges and applying standards that would have ended TOS in 6 episodes, pretending that TOS was JAG in space.

Speaking of trolling...

Just a plain statement of fact.

Yep. My statement sure was.;)

Is that the BBS equivalent of "I know you are but what am I?"

Got it.

Well, by your logic, that should be sufficient. All you seem to be able to do is accuse me of trolling when you never offer any explanations for why you disagree with my statements. If I say I didn't like something, I explain why. All you do is call those of us who don't share your opinions trolls. I call pot calling kettle black. Make an argument. Rebut some of my claims. Then I may consider taking some of your comments seriously...maybe.

Brilliant. You're just like the energizer bunny.

How many times did you see the film and did you bring a notebook with you?

Oops. I missed this one. I wrote two paragraphs and all you could come up with was this? Clearly I have nothing to worry about from you. Keep up the smilies and the infantile insults. I'll continue to make valid points and back them up with "brilliant" explanations. Which is far better than anything you seem to be able to conjure.

Oh, BTW, I've seen the movie maybe four times. And no, no notebook. Just a good memory. The cheese stood out quite clearly.

Have a nice day.

You seem to go out of your way to make every thread into a "I hate Abrams Trek" thread. You just posted about how someone says Vader in the Trek Tech thread, which has very little to do about the forum. You made a video displaying your TOS models and chose to include the JJ model just to complain about it. I don't need to argue any of your claims. It's obvious as is your need to pollute every thread with your whining. You are being called out on it.

There's a lot of TV shows and movies I don't like. I don't join message boards for fans who like that stuff just to exercise my right to complain.

How is that calling the kettle black?

That's right, it isn't. I'm simply pointing out the FACT that some people are only popping in here to harangue and annoy those who want to actually discuss something.

It's certainly your right to not like something, but your opinion doesn't make it fact. And if you feel the need that it's your right to constantly express that sentiment in every thread whether appropriate or not, you should respect my right to call out the lunacy and immaturity of such a tactic.
Wouldn't that be equally fair? Or are you the only person allowed to have an opinion?

Wrong. Well, except about the Vader thing. I accidentally posted that in the wrong section. Oops. However, wrong on everything else. I'm not the only "hater" here. Why you seem fixated on me is the oddity. If you'll remember, this is a discussion forum. It's not a JJ-Lovers only club. If I feel the need to express my opinion, I shall do so whenever I deem necessary. You have exactly the same right. My opinion will invariably differ from yours. That doesn't make either of us right or wrong. But neither does it give you the right to insult me just because I don't share your opinion.

And yeah, I despise the Abramsprise. I can't help it. It's a very disproportionate and ungainly design. And I deliberately put it in the video to express my dislike of it. What of it? Why does that anger you so? It's a simple case of someone expressing an opinion.

There's a lot of TV shows and movies I don't like. I don't join message boards for fans who like that stuff just to exercise my right to complain

Wut? So trekbbs is indeed a "JJ-Trek Lover's only club. And those who have different opinions aren't allowed in because they would disrupt the harmony? That really needs to be put up in big letters on the main page to keep folks like me out. I'm a member of only two Trek forums. The other is stagnant at the moment. So this is the only one I can go to now. I usually enjoy good discussion and civilized conversation here. Until a JJ-Lover starts insulting the "haters" and the whole thing degenerates into a pot-shot fest. Then it's no fun anymore. Discussion and debate can be interesting as long as both parties can discuss the topic at hand in a civilized manner.

How is that calling the kettle black?

See above.

That's right, it isn't.

Unfortunately, it is.

I'm simply pointing out the FACT that some people are only popping in here to harangue and annoy those who want to actually discuss something.

You have an interesting view of what FACTs are. It is also a FACT that some people are here only to insult and degrade those who actually want to discuss opinions that don't agree with yours and those like you.

It's certainly your right to not like something, but your opinion doesn't make it fact.

I never said it did. And you have just as much right to like something. But your opinion doesn't make it fact either. Nor does it make anything I may say any less valid.

And if you feel the need that it's your right to constantly express that sentiment in every thread whether appropriate or not, you should respect my right to call out the lunacy and immaturity of such a tactic.
Wouldn't that be equally fair? Or are you the only person allowed to have an opinion.

What? I'm by far not the only person here with opinions. You have several, apparently. So does every other person here. Nor am I the only one whose opinion differs from yours. However, again, you seem fixated on me. And I have as much right to call you on your infantile responses to my posts. Especially when I actually try to back up my opinions with explanations that make sense, while all you seem capable of doing is insulting me and putting up those reduculous laughing smilies. Of course, I use them too on occasion. But I try to keep it to a minimum.

Now, having said all that, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could get back on topic and start discussing the good as well as the bad about this movie in a more civilized manner. Especially one where nobody insults anybody else or calls names or tries to play holier-than-thou? Wouldn't that be nice?

OK, I-Am-Zim, what did you like about the movie?

That's a good question. Kind of hard to answer, though. I liked the movie itself as a whole. It was actually pretty good. I liked the action and the fast pace. It kept your attention. There were a couple of scenes that drug a bit, like the opening sequence. But for the most part it was a very engaging movie. Honestly, if it were called anything but Star Trek, I probably would have loved it. Even with the planet-sized plot holes, it was still a very good generic sci-fi tiem travel summer blockbuster. As far as the "Star Trek" aspects, I did like Karl Urban's portrayal of Dr. McCoy. To me, he was spot-on. I really felt like he was channeling DeForrest Kelley. I liked the effects. The CGI was fantastic. Even though I didn't really care for the overall look, I can't deny that the effects were fabulous. I liked some of the references to TOS, even though they felt out of place and forced at times. Especially Bones' "Good God man!"...

Oops! Time caught up with me. I gotta go pick up the kids. Be back to finish up later.

Does that mean you'll be leaving us? I don't see anyone else name calling.. Oh, and spell check is your friend. Being able to spell your insults correctly will fortify the credibility of your rhetoric.

That's enough of making it about other posters, please. Talk about the movie or don't talk about the movie, but stop taking pokes at each other.

I'm a huge TOS fan, and a proponent of Star Trek '09, and found it to be a very enjoyable movie. Now with that said, there were some things I wasn't happy with. The design of the ship, for one, and it's inconsistent size. Simon Pegg's portrayal of Scotty was another (although I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with Pegg's acting abilities; he was told to act like a clown for some Jar-Jar Binks-style comic relief). I also cringed at the end of the movie when Kirk was given command of the Enterprise while still a cadet (would a tagline "five years later" really have hurt?) But overall, I was pretty happy with the film and was glad that it was so successful, because after Nemesis and Enterprise, Star Trek was pretty much dead for the foreseeable future.

However, what I really don't like is when certain people try to tell me that I'm a moron for liking the film, by self-proclaimed TOS "experts" who were predisposed to hating the film anyway. So I'm glad to see that you're not like that.

I had a problem with blowing up Vulcan, but it was a bold move. The Uhura/Spock thing was a little wierd, though there was strong subtext of that in TOS' first season. Trek XI did seem to capture the chemistry of Kirk/Spock/McCoy in a way we haven't seen for years and provided a prequel feel of how they all met. Alt universe or no, certain events depicted in the film could certainly have happened: Kirk cheating on the Kobyashi Maru, Kirk and Spock meeting, Spock being teased by Vulcan kids and joining StarFleet to protest the Vulcan Council's comments about his human half. I don't have a problem with a lot of the way these characters were interpreted for this reboot. I thought they all nailed the essence of their characters and the use of humour was less groan worthy than any other Star Trek film to date.

This film holds up to repeated viewings as well as the others have been. Hell, I might watch it again tonight!

I have no problem with anyone who liked the movie. Heck, I even liked it. It was a good sci-fi/time travel/action/adventure movie. It just wasn't good Star Trek for me. The only problem I had with the whole thing was that they went with the alternate universe reboot instead of setting the movie within the existing Star Trek universe. Any more installments of Abramsverse Star Trek will never be true Star Trek for me. These characters are not the ones I know. They are not the ones I have been a fan of for half my life. They are alternate unverse copies of the originals. Imperfect copies, at that. TOS-TNG will always be "my" Star Trek. AbramsTrek will be the Trek for the next generation. And thy can have it. I suppose I prefer to live in the past. Since the future doesn't look all that bright to me.

Anyway, back to what I "liked". I did like the design of the Kelvin and its shuttles. Particularly Robau's shuttle. It looked like a TOS shuttle. The Kelvin didn't look like it could be from the same universe as pre-TOS, but I still liked the overall design. I would have preferred something more along these lines:

Sorry for the big picture. Something like this would have made it easier to believe that NuOldSpock and Nero emerged from the wormhole into the past of the actual TOS universe. For me, anyway. I also liked the Kelvin's communicator designs. They looked like TOS communicators. the only problem is that they should have looked like the comms from "The Cage" and "WNMHGB" to make it easier to believe that they were actually pre-TOS. I also liked the "weathered" look they gave to the shuttles. I also found the "hanging" buildings on Vulcan interesting. Wierd. But interesting. I just wonder who came up with that idea. There are probably a couple more things I could pick out that I really liked, but I have to get back to work. In the immortal words of Aaahnold: "I'll be back."
