Walking Dead Season 7 Discussion - Spoilers possible!

The show is still doing pretty well in the ratings and one of the most watched shows on TV Sunday nights, which is pretty good for a cable series.

I was trying to place where I'd seen her before, and it turns out Natania was played by the same actress who portrayed the leader of the aliens from planet Eczema IV in the Dandruff Quadrant in DS9 - Sanctuary.

I agree with the sentiments of some of the others that Tara's (and Heath's) story really didn't require a full episode to tell, especially with all the extended episodes they've been doing. There's no reason why they couldn't have combined last week's Hilltop story with this week's Oceanside story and alternated back and forth between them so we can get back to telling more stories with the main group. I feel like we've been robbed of a lot of the impact and changing dynamic of what they went through in last season's finale and episode one by breaking up the stories so much, the same way we were with the disjointed "Heading to Terminus" episodes after the prison fell. It was one thing with The Kingdom episode, because we needed a levity break from the intensity and sadness of the first episode, but now it just feels like filler when there's only a couple of episodes left before the show goes into hiatus until next year.

This feels like the post-Prison season where we just get isolated episodes from each cast member with snippets of story, but treading water until they want to put the band back together so things can happen. Can tell where this season seems to be going, but we're just waiting for it to happen instead of giving enough interesting things along the way...

It seems to me that this has been the style of the show since that season. Imagine how boring Game of Thrones would be if it used the same style as Walking Dead. One episode at the wall, one episode with Dani, one episode with Tyrion, etc. I haven't looked at directing credits and production information but my guess is that it allows multiple episodes with different behind the cameras people filming simultaneously?

Whatever the reason, a lot has happened this season. Imagine how great the pacing of the series would be if the different story lines were developed over the course of multiple episodes. Ep. 2 would have had the introduction of the kingdom maybe ending with Carol meeting the king and his tiger, Tara's fight on the bridge and falling into the river, the first few minutes of the Daryl episode, and Maggie's first conversation and medical check up at Hilltop. Ep. 3 to 5 could then mix in the saviors visit to Alexandria with Carl's story in ep. 6.

There's enough suspense and drama in the series overall--I just think the editing needs work.

It's still 11 million viewers; just hope a carotid hasn't been nicked and the bleeding stops.

...and that Sunday night series has ratings that crushes all other fantasy series (GoT being one exception). TWD will be around long after the rest have faded into obscurity.

Caprica did this. They struggled to follow all their subplots at the same time and it came across as unfocused.

i think the staggered make a lot of sense with the way people are so separated. I mean, in between head bashings, Tara & Heath were having on the road banter, Carol was out cold, Hilltop wasn't aware of what was happening.

Once Carol gets back, and Carl returns (with maybe a Hilltop update from Jesus), they can reset. And then, we can switch between communities, with the season finale poising for war, and the 2nd half having, I am guessing, at least 3 close calls where Negan almost finds out the civil war plot.

I've a friend who just watches episodes like this on fast forward. If Rick's not in it and it's simply two boring characters going on a supply run and running and hiding from walkers for an hour he knows he isn't missing much and is simply not bothered or interested. And tbh most of the time I don't blame him. He's done this 3-4 times already this series.

Ratings seem to be hitting lows this season (post-premiere), so maybe people are starting to feel that way too. Can't be that many people just watching for Glenn...

"Sing Me a Song"-

So many emotional directions in this episode:

Negan--ever the manipulator--ties to play Carl as surrogate father figure (abusive father figure) or simply making him a turncoat to his own people.
Negan trying to humiliate Daryl in front of Carl...
Negan shames Dwight with Sherry, but...
Sherry gives questionable glances at Daryl--while instantly picking up on his relationship to Carl.
Dwight looks as if he will reach his breaking point and turn (note the look he exchanges with Daryl during the "iron" speech), but I'm still having a hard time thinking he will be the first to turn, if at all.

Father Gabriel's "its our actions that matter in the end" says something else to Spencer, who cannot embrace the failure of his evil thoughts. Eventually, ASZ would have been discovered by the Saviors, or the Wolves, and his people would have been woefully unprepared to do anything about it. Spencer's ridiculous credits list of Deanna's political life illustrates his utter lack of life experience--and a belief in the old world of motormouth politicians grandstanding their way through life--protected. That's all he's ever known, and it explains his family's ultimate fate.

Father Gabriel is the one man Negan underestimates---and for now, that's a good thing.

While Michonne's Negan-esque walker road trap was clever, the fact the mid-season finale lands next week seems to predict something terrible for her in the event she reaches the Savior compound..like being forced to be one of Negan's wives--or "delivered" to another member--letting Rick know he has nothing left.

Rosita being an ass to Eugene has run its course; whether it is her genuine feelings or "tough love," verbally abusing him--forgetting that he's almost as emotionally traumatized as she is--goes nowhere good. She forgets how Eugene has provided information on what crops to grow, he knows how to make bullets...fought the walker invasion in "No Way Out," and knew exactly what parts were needed to fix ASZ's solar power system. Truth be told, he's more valuable to the future of that world than Rosita.

Like Michonne, she appears to be headed toward disaster.

Carl telling Negan to jump out of the window was priceless.

...and the "Go now" note and key for Daryl....again, mid season finale next week...all kinds of "wrong" about anyone--even Sherry--helping Daryl at this point.

Negan is getting on my nerves. Not JDM's fault, he is great, just Negan's whole shtick is becoming tedious fast.

Yeah, but what made him like that? He is a psychotic one trick pony, not a character. Act threatening, grin, act threatening again, laugh it off, rinse and repeat.

How is GOT an exception? The highest rating GOT ever got was 8.89 - which is worse than Walking Dead after the current MASSIVE drop. GOT dropped more users between the season premiere and now than GOT ever had.

Meaning of all fantasy series on TV, TWD leaves the rest in the dust (look at the average ratings of the CW DC series, for example), but GOT has impressive ratings for a fantasy series.

I completely agree that it's getting repetitive. Negan is a vulgar asshole - but we got that already. Did we need a 90 minute episode to tell us this fact again?

By only comparing it to fantasy shows you are underrating just how popular TWD is. It's the 4th highest show overall, and 3rd highest rated scripted show on TV. And in the 18-34 demo it's #1! I don't know what the budget is, but I'd say the show needs to drop to below 3 million for cancellation to even start being considered.

I compare it to fantasy series because that's the genre its most associated with in TV discussions. I'm not denying its overall popularity, but rarely do you see anyone discussing TWD in the same breath as (for example) 2 Broke Girls or Criminal Minds.

I think it's hard for the mainstream to admit that a genre show is the most popular thing on TV.

As for comparison with genre shows I believe TNG was the most popular genre show of all time with a peak of 17.4 million - a number already surpassed by TWD.

Oh come on, Korl, we know you can sing better than THAT!
