USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

Why would it be there? Shuttles don't need long landing strips. Discovery doesn't even have a similar lip. So what's the point?

This ship isn't the only federation ship to have it in Star Trek's history. The intrepid has it.

The Galaxy Class, while not a lip, has flat areas in front of its shuttle bays with stripes and such.

The Sovereign's main shuttle bay on the saucer has a similar area.

What difference does that make? Adding it to the Enterprise now, after more than 50 years, is a random, arbitrary change that does nothing to make the ship look more "modern."

My preference is for the designers to do minimally invasive surgery -- the least change necessary, and there should be good reasons for those changes.

It's like how artists at DC keep futzing with Superman's suit -- everyone wants to claim they had an influence on an iconic design.

It's a neutral change.

I personally think it looks nicer.

That's fine. But it's still a random change, which was my only point.

The striping is also a random change, and I say that as someone who likes the striping.

Yeah, I get the desire for increased hull detailing and the like, but if the complaint is the design is too dated, I don't see how futzing around in the margins with things like the goofy shuttle bay lip, the random striping and the tacky saucer lights make the ship look "modern." Non-fans aren't even going to notice the difference.

All of this is true - nothing "modern" about this.

Well anyway, on the topic of interesting things about the redesign: Interesting that they pulled from WNMHGB with those black strips on either side of the upper saucer.

It's only unique feature is split nacelle pylons, otherwise it's just a combination of TOS and TMP Enterprise elements, and NX-01 textures.
If the show was a reboot then that might be a valid argument
But since we are trying to stick closer to the Prime Universe I don't see that as a problem.

If they were trying to stick closer to the Prime Universe, this wouldn't be a Klingon D7 cruiser:
