Trailer 3 Discussion Thread

Looks awesome - and it convinced a colleague to give it a go!

Talked with a friend about it, love the fact a guy from Liverpool, who has a relatively obvious North England accent is playing a Starfleet Captain with a traditionally Spanish name with an American accent that sounds like it's from the Southern states (to our untrained ear, it sounded a little like Tucker).
Well, they have another actor born in Malaysia -- but is of Chinese ancestry -- who will be playing a Captain with a traditionally Greek last name.

I thought it was a little bit better than the previous trailers, looks like they're aware of some of the criticism and have tried to make it a bit brighter and more optimistic, but the Klingon angle is still there.

In case I do decide to watch it... when will the entire season be up? I don't like to wait to see the next episode.

The season is broken up into two parts. After the first 6 or 7 episodes it goes on a break until the beginning of 2018. So the first half should all be up 6 or 7 week weeks after the Sept 24 release. For the entire season Spring of 2018 depending on when the second half starts.

The trailer has a TVMA rating on it. That's news to me.

Sonequa Martin-Green is terrible again in this trailer. Really bad narration. It just doesn't suit her. She doesn't have that strong presence like Stewart/Brooks/Mulgrew. She sounds sounds like a kid.

TV-MA? Whelp, looks like I can cancel my CBS All Access account then. Shame, I was looking forward to the show. Oh well.

well I'm hoping the mid season finale has a cliffhanger

Or Lorca is just now letting her out of the brig? No combadges in the brig perhaps? Or no rank insignia? That could be a corridor of detention cells they're walking down. (Apologies, if someone else has said that already.)

P.S. Lens flare!!!!
I'd agree except we see her in an orange-ish suit while in the brig and she does walk around in that suit for a bit since we see her in it with Cadet Tilly in what is probably crew quarters. That and they're not combadges, just rank insignia. All in all though I really enjoy your theory.

True. It is going to be somewhere between when she gets out of the bridge and fully assumes duty. I would guess this is when she first gets to discovery and hasn't let been logged in as an official member of the crew yet. She got her uniform but can't get the official rank badge until she's completely official.

Yeah, there have been plenty of gay characters on PG and 14 shows for the last couple of decades now. Willow was gay on Buffy and we saw her kissing her girlfriends quite a bit and that was always PG and/or 14.

While the US system can be weird, I'll grant, I have a feeling that it has more to do with nudity than anything else.
.
Did they ever have any nudity on The Magicians or The Expanse?

Just because it's MA doesn't mean it's going to super graphic, like I've been saying, there are quite a few MA shows that don't really go much farther than the 14 stuff on the networks. Honestly, I think there was more disturbing, graphic violence on shows like Hannibal and CSI than on The Expanse, The Magicians, or The Strain. The sex wasn't really that much more explicit either, and I don't remember there being any nudity on any of them. If there was it might have just been a quick flash of a bare ass somewhere.
I honestly didn't even realize The Expanse was MA until I saw a big TV-MA sticker on the Season 2 DVD set at Wal-Mart.

As great as it was, I still don't understand how the hell Hannibal was able to get away with the stuff they did and still be on NBC.

I'm glad that someone finds it funny. :p This will be first new Star Trek I won't watch in approximately 35 years. I just hope that the show will be good for those that will watch it.

I'm just so glad that people are not watching it for petty reasons like "TV-MA". Makes the rest of us appreciate it for what it is.

BTW: How was that TNG episode "Conspiracy". Good for kids, right?
