Ah, you're one of them, that sure explains a whole hell of a lot.In the words of Trump: "Wrong"
I want both, and there is no reason you can't have both.People just want a good story. N o way you can be diverse enough, after all.

I actually don't like Trump, but throwing a meme in here isn't cake.Ah, you're one of them, that sure explains a whole hell of a lot.

true.. but people don't relate to people in another galaxy based on their race..I mean.. it's not like the characters come from Africa or China or anywhere on Earth nor do they share that history.. so putting them in there might be ok.. but putting a big flashing sign that they are being placed in there is just pandering and actually takes away form the escapism ...Disney/Lucasfilm wants s larger audience. An international audience. diversity helps if people other than just white males and white females can relate to the main and/or secondary characters.

I'm honestly really shocked to see you write that, you sound exactly like the kind of person who would absolutely worship him.I actually don't like Trump, but throwing a meme in here isn't cake.
Even if they're in books set in a galaxy far far away, people still like having heroes who are like them. I've heard tons of stories from people about how meant for them to have heroes who were like them. I was going to say something about how I hope we eventually get some heroes with disabilities, but then I remembered we've had two, Luke and Anakin are both amputees with artificial limbs.true.. but people don't relate to people in another galaxy based on their race..I mean.. it's not like the characters come from Africa or China or anywhere on Earth nor do they share that history.. so putting them in there might be ok.. but putting a big flashing sign that they are being placed in there is just pandering and actually takes away form the escapism ...
Then read it again. So they don't have melanin in a galaxy far, far away? Or ultra-violet radiation? Or genders? The Star Wars galaxy is somehow unique in its ability to produce only white males?
This is some of the dumbest fucking shit I've read yet, and that really is saying something where you're involved.
my friend is handicapped.. been that way all his life. He's moved from being able to be in a chair to being in a bed all the time. But he certainly never went actively searching for movies where the hero was in a wheelchair.. or in a gurney. And he didn't complain once about not being "represented".. so this is utter bullshit to the core. His favorite recent film is Ford v Ferrari.. and he likes it because he loves the story, and the history. I was not familiar with the story or the history.. hell, I HATE racing as a sport and I have no interest, yet that movie kicks seven kinds of ass.. because it just told its fucking story and got out.Sometimes it is about audio/visual. Sometimes it is about similar lifestyle. Sometimes its about situations, be it childhood life, or adult life. But people like to be able to relate to a character. While visual is not as important in a novel, it is still needed from time to time to assist the imagination. If a story can be written that allows the audience to see themselves in the hero's place, it works better for some (others that doesn't work for them as all, as they don't want to imagine themselves in a story.) But when it comes to film or tv, it helps if the audience, or a section of the audience, can relate to the hero or a hero visually. Others can relate based on situation, similar life choices, or other dynamics. But visual is still important in an audio/visual format such as a film.
Most people might not go to a movie specifically looking for representation, but people appreciate it when they see characters who they relate too, and especially for kids it can really mean a lot to have a hero who is like them. Have you not heard all of the stories about how important and inspirational it was for black girls in the '60 to see Uhura on the bridge of the Enterprise along with people like Kirk, and Spock and McCoy.Then read it again.
You can put different people of different races in, sure.
but people don't watch Star Wars to look to see if they are being represented, they don't look to see if tthe characters have the same pigment on skin they do. They certainly don't watch to see if the characters come from the same cultural heritage they do. They watch for lightsabers, heroes villains and all of that. So the creators are welcome to populate their galaxy with whomever they choose, but if they think that this is WHY people watch than they are mostly wrong
Can we not.I'm honestly really shocked to see you write that, you sound exactly like the kind of person who would absolutely worship him.
It's not bullshit to want to see myself in a mythological story. You are talking about a real historic event, vs. a fantasy world where you can have a huge amount of diversity.my friend is handicapped.. been that way all his life. Rey is the exact same way. Her being female meant very little to the story itself and it is a reading in to the material based upon and obsession with BTS garbage that has no bearing on the actually story coming out. People will like the story or not based upon that.Having Luke be a white hero was not important in the 70s, it was just the fact that he was a character that was a hero
I didn't bring it up. Lucasfilm did.. they thought it was so important they wrote it twice on the boar. Man I wish they had written "dinosaurs!" twiceBecause diversity came up again.

That's baloney, unless you believe that Luke could have just as effectively been a black female in the 1977 film. Pretty much everyone knows a black female would have been received differently, ergo it was important that Luke be a white male.Having Luke be a white hero was not important in the 70s, it was just the fact that he was a character that was a hero, one that began as a young person that people could relate to.. and then from there he had a clear arc and he did some cool things and made some cool friends
sure they could have done that. Sure. But they didn't and plenty of people of all types still loved and related to the character's essence, humanity, herois.. and the fantasy aspects of him. he was an archetype, a wish fulfillment for all humanity, and he was (in terms of look) taken right out of the pulpy comic books from decades before. I won't ever fault Lucas for thatThat's baloney, unless you believe that Luke could have just as effectively been a black female in the 1977 film. And anyway, why does every topic that you participate in have to devolve into a debate on diversity in SW or about whether Kathleen Kennedy is good for SW, etc.?
Some people do. Not as their primary reason, but they do look for it.Then read it again.
