Somewhere, somehow, Sonni Cooper just had the sudden urge to do this:
Some crazed STD fan trolls crossed the line with Anas Abdin. All this rage about a poorly written over produced sci fi show. I hope they track them down via their on line account addresses. https://boundingintocomics.com/2019/10/21/crazed-star-trek-discovery-fans-threaten-anas-abdins-life/
I hope they do too. I have a sneaking suspicion as to where it might lead.
That article is difficult to take seriously when it accuses this:
"You're being set up for a fall. Please don't listen to these hateful YouTubers, they don't care if you crash and burn over this."
"What is tragic is that these outrage merchants who convinced you to take this on wont be there to bail you out when CBS asks you to pay their legal fees"
Of trolling. That's pretty much a flame attack in of itself. The death threats are over the line, but that's not somehow new to Trek. Nick Meyer got death threats regarding killing Spock. I am sorry, truly sorry, Abdin is getting this garbage, but let's not pretend it is new to this franchise. It's not.
You are a more trusting soul than I.
We have an article from a site which nailed its colours to the mast a long time ago on Discovery citing "trolling" of Abdin which is nowhere near the level of what, for instance, any official Discovery tweet receives. Funnily enough, I've yet to see an article about Crazed TNG Fans Attack Discovery Writers. Hell, there's a better example of trolling in the post linking the article than the article itself.
Then there's the death threat. Written like a ten-year-old with multiple homophobic slurs. How remarkable that someone could be such a rabid fan of Discovery - a show which prominently features a homosexual relationship - as to send such a nasty threat. Particularly remarkable as it is often those who most dislike Discovery who tend to be negative about the inclusion of a homosexual relationship.
What remarkable timing too, just as Abdin is trying to raise money for his appeal. Look people, a "Drekkie" is sending death threats trying to get Abdin to drop his appeal. Know how to show them? Support the appeal!
I will reserve my sympathy. It has a whiff about it, and Abdin and his supporters are milking it for all it is worth.
I am trying to give the benefit of the doubt but it certainly doesn't look good.
He lost me at 'Pro CBS Trolls', forgive me if i think that a website that clearly has an agenda might not be portraying the situation accurately. But yes I hope the threats are looked into because I think the source of these threats aren't 'crazed discovery fans'. It's funny how you mention rage regarding discovery because there's certainly been a lot of it coming from the people who don't like it the last 2 years.
To the person that notified on this post, calling for law enforcement (hopefully that's what was being done here) tracking down a verified threat is neither wrong nor advocating "doxxing". If that's a legit threat than yes, the person making the threat should be tracked down and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I think this lawsuit and appeal is ridiculous but no one should be threatened over it.
That being said, the whole tone of that article makes the veracity of its conclusions rather suspect, and it should be taken with a grain of salt without further evidence. Nor is it in any way representative of the vast majority of fans and observers who disagreed with this lawsuit or appeal.
And this thread is going right down the same path of the previous one. This is not the place to carry out your petty internecine fandom grudges or to express your extreme dislike of the show. Comment on the facts of the case alone.
There is no proof that the threatening messages in that article are linked to DSC fans or even reality.
The tweets from DSC fans are linked to and are fairly bland, the hateful messages are screencaps with anything that could identify who they are from hidden.
It's agenda driven nonsense designed to push clicks to Nerdrotic et al.
What's the betting they turn out to be new accounts all traced back to Anas or anti-Disco facebook weirdos?
If you are falling for this..............I have a bridge to sell you.
First, this website is not a credible site. I put them in the fandom meanance category.
Next, the actual tweets they listed were just people who disagreed with Anas and were not threats. People WILL disagree with you on the internet. That isn't a crime and isn't a prioblem. You can't expect 100% support.
If people did send actual threats, turn them over to the police and let them deal with them. That is their job. Posting them on the internet does nothing.
I'm sorry but this comes accross to me as a "woe is me... the haters.. I mean CBS trolls are doing mean things to me so feel sorry for me" like we have seen members of the fandom meanane do all too often especially on LFIM. The tactics just look way too similar for me to really believe that this is legit. However, if it is those people are completely wrong and the police should investigate.
My question for those who believe Abdin is right and CBS is wrong, what is the endgame? What happens if this gets all the way to the Supreme Court (who I doubt would even hear the case, but hypothetically) and the Supreme Court rules for CBS? Or in the more likely scenario, if the Supreme Court denies to even hear the case, do you admit you are wrong? Or if not, THEN what?
He’ll cancel the game and call it the game shut down by cbs.
As somebody who thought Abdin had a case - purely based on obvious similarity of the Tardigrade - up until somebody made the effort to reconstruct the entire timeline (Abdin's Tardigrade trailer was first, but when that trailer dropped, the Tardigrade episode of DIS had already been filmed - though no trailer or image published) - I'll tell you what:
In the same way I think that whoever created "Nick Locarno" should have received residuals for the character being used on VOY (now renamed to "Tom Paris"). I love that character. And so apparently did the creators. That's why I still think it's unfair they're screwing the original creators of the character by re-naming him and pretending he's a "new" character.
Of course, all that would have only ever applied to the Tardigrade itself (which IS kinda' similar) - never the full show. And now - with CBS proven to have come up with it independently - not even that.
I feel for Abdin. But he has no case anymore.
Also: Fuck everybody that makes death threats on the internet. Even "joke" ones, or straight up trolling.
Also also: Fuck (slightly less) trying to politicise/generalize such stupid behaviour to "make a point" about the "other side".
That article lost me completely at "...Abdin's tragic loss to CBS.."
I stopped reading.
Except... we've already seen examples of a Tardigrade being used in other forms of entertainment before Abdin put his first video out.
So who should Abdin be paying residuals too?
(also, my apologies for double posting, again. I'm in FL attempting to use the Mrs SURFACE for the first time)
For what it's worth, here's what Media Bias Fact Check has to say about them.
Basically, they're good about fact-checking, but they bias their language to promote right-wing and conservative viewpoints. Given what a flashpoint female-led franchises and "forced diversity" are these days, well, we can guess what their opinion of DSC is.
I looked there and they said BiC never failed a fact check. Followed the link and there had been zero fact checks of them. So not sure from that it canbe said they are good about fact-checking. They just haven't been checked by that site.
