Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

If he was such good friends why was Mendez describing him to Kirk. As for calling Chris....So what! That's his name. There is nothing in the menagerie indicating Kirk had more than a fleeting meeting with Pike. Nothing.
Because Mendez doesn't know the nature of Pike and Kirk's relationship.

MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?
KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.
MENDEZ: About your age. Big, handsome man, vital, active.
KIRK: I took over the Enterprise from him. Spock served with him for several years.
SPOCK: Eleven years, four months, five days.

It's kind of a dumb scene, since Kirk clearly has met Pike and would know what he looks like. There's no reason for Mendez to describe Pike to Kirk. And of course Mendez saying he's Kirk's age is absurd. Spock served with Pike thirteen years prior, when Pike was Captain of the Enterprise. If he's Kirk's age then he was captain around the age of 22. Jeff Hunter doesn't look 22 in "The Cage."

If they were such good friends why did mendez have to describe him??? I thought Kirk collaborated once with Pike (non alternate reality episode) AND even had a song and dance with Khans great great great great great great grand niece/daughter or whatever..........yet here he is barely knowing Pike.... 😂
These inconsistencies aren't limited to prequels. For example, Soji Asha in Picard is presented as a Borg expert who's smart enough to work on the Artifact, a derelict Borg cube. She soon meets Picard, Riker, and is told she's the daughter of Data. Not once does she show any recognition (or "fangirling" for that matter) of the heroes who are one of the few people to defeat the Borg, despite her stated expertise on the Borg meaning she should recognize them and their histories on sight.

Seriously? She was going through an existential crisis at the time where she was learning many things she had previously believed to be true were outright fabrications and was questioning the fundamentals of her existence and you think she should have put that aside and been in fangirl awe of the people she had just met?

Yes.

It's called the fan response.

Nope. I'm right. Why would mendez even have to mention what pile looked like and his age to Kirk?? Anyone viewing this for years clearly saw Kirk barely knew Pike. SNW does not change the meaning of this scene me. Kirk met pike when he was fleet Captain. Briefly. End of story....I win....you all lose ..... 😂
Perhaps because Mendez isn't aware of the fact that Pike and Kirk met YEARS ago.
And why would he?

He even acts like he doesn't know that with his dialogue.

Mendez is a flag officer at a Starbase on the edge of Federation space. I wouldn't expect him to know the life histories of either man outside of the public record.
Also, Captain Kirk's response is simplistic, he obviously doesn't need to go into minute detail about his past with Pike considering the situation.
Mendez doesn't need to know all that.

Wrong.

What some of us noticed was that "The Menagerie" was a hastily-written script in which characters said and did nonsensical things to set up the scenario of watching "The Cage."

Did you even notice, when you watched it, that Mendez's description of Pike doesn't even make sense?

"About your age..."

Nope. Based on the story, Pike was older than Kirk - at least fifteen years older, as he's shown to be in SNW.

Sloppy.

If it helps, there's wiggle room that everything after Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is an alternate timeline due to the change in the Eugenics Wars. Nothing is stopping you from seeing it that way.
You can apply a similar scenario to the Gorn. In Enterprise, its quite a substantial plot point that someone came back in time and messed with Suliban DNA. They were provided with abilities like shapeshifting, enhanced senses, and adaptability to extreme environments. All to stop the formation of the UFP.

The same faction could've tried again with another species, or even a rival faction that really loves James Cameron movies.

Mendez described him after krik said he met Pike after he became fleet Captain and he got the Enterprise.

All this arguments about what Mendez said about Pike are funny. It's been a while since I watched that episode, but wasn't Mendez an illusion created by Talosians and not a real person? lol

Another thing is that the Gorn doesn't immediately infect Kirk with Gorn eggs to win the fight and be done with it. Maybe the Metrons told the Gorn this was too much of an unfair advantage and forbid this action, but that also is highly improbable in context of the Metrons seemingly allowing both combatants to do everything in their power to win.
I think the egg infection thing is done by young Gorns only. The one that Kirk faced didn't seem young.
