Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I wonder if he’ll just be a one season character
Maybe just one episode even? Chapel meets him off-screen during the time jump after the conclusion of “Hegemony”, he’s introduces as her fiancé and then he goes off on an expedition? Would be kinda weird to introduce him in the press releases then, though.

I'm not complaining much as I thought they'd call it after S4 with everything that's going on with Paramount.

That said, I wonder why only 6 episodes for S5 and not the usual 10 (Hell. it was 13 to 14 when they were coproducing ST: D with Netflix.)

But I guess times continue to change and I happy they have 6 more episodes to play with and the knowledge it's their final season so they can do a nice send off of these characters into the TOS timfame.

I'll take 46 episodes total with gratitude.

Yeah but we should have had 50 (at least).

Indeed, yes.

Paramount is under no obligation to make episodes of Star Trek beyond their business will allow.

Besides, I thought newer Trek was drek and needed cancelling?

First 5 eps are discussed briefly

"The end result is more of what fans have come to expect: an entertaining, fun, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes frustrating show, with a strong cast of characters getting into a variety space adventures and hijinks."

"There are plenty of nods to the franchise’s past, while the show’s stewards find ways to keep the show fresh, balancing serious sci-fi and the societal commentary for which “Trek” is known along with swashbuckling action along with cheeky humor."

"While there are certainly some big swings and interesting concepts in the first half of the season, Strange New Worlds is beginning to lose some of that Star Trek magic. In a franchise known for going boldly and pushing boundaries, Strange New Worlds Season 3 has pumped the brakes in many ways."

"It’s tempting to say that SNW succeeds because, of all the newer Trek shows, it's the one that feels the most like fan fiction."

About the murder mystery episode and something seen in the trailer: "But it’s not just a Christie-style mystery, it’s one set in 1960s Hollywood and about a
murder on the set of a space adventure show that’s basically just a redressed “Original Series,”
with “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” style abounding."
Does that mean that
there is a "Kind of Star Trek" in universe?
:D

As a mourner (to the point of rocking in the corner chanting 'it's only on hiatus') of Legends of Tomorrow I'm quite excited for the silly murder mystery episode.

Everything I’m hearing about season 3 sounds great. I’m not sure why some of these people are such downers

The second half of the season might be better

Or, we’ll end up enjoying these episodes just as much as other reviewers did.

I don’t recommend going in with the same mentalities as any specific reviewer, you know? And I say that as somebody with a fair number of “professional” reviews published, myself.

As an aside, while IndieWire’s review does get rather pointed at times, I find it to be a positive outlook on these five episodes overall. More importantly, it’s well-written. Props to the author!

From the reddit post @Tuskin38 has posted upthread:
Akiva teased that they want to arc everything toward the Original Series and, once their show is over, they'll still have all the sets, so...
Oh, I’m kinda surprised he’s spelling it out this clearly. Not surprised that he would try to do everything to offer himself up for the possibility of continuing his work on Trek after Strange New Worlds concludes, but surprised he’s actively pursuing an “arc towards the Original Series” on the show. That’s not what my personal preference would be, to be honest. Some argue that’s the whole premise of the show, but I don’t see it that way.

In my mind the concept of the show is just showing us the adventures of Captain Pike, his crew and the Enterprise before Kirk took over with his crew for his adventures. Basically to do its own thing, without forcing itself to become more and more similar to the status quo at the beginning of the Original Series. Still, after the wonderful first two seasons he and his writers have definitely earned my trust to ultimately do it satisfyingly. Introduce a legacy character here or there, throw in some reference to TOS from time to time … but don’t be ridiculous and have everything in place that we know from “Where No Man Has Gone Before”. That would be totally unnecessary.

Man, I’m not too in love with that idea, but I guess it would be just desserts after I’ve espoused how good how cool a Legacy show might be. Turnabout [intruder] is fair play?

I’d watch it, but I have serious doubts that it’ll get made. I could very well even enjoy it! SNW is great, and I say that as someone who lamented going back to the TOS era.

If he thinks that CBS is going to make a TOS show once SNW ends, I think he’s being a bit delusional. Terry Matalas level delusional.
