Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I liked the SNW S1 finale update to the M.M.'s that Pike was using, but the front flap really looked off and the shoulder strap absurdly long. I couldn't figure out what was going on there, as the original flaps followed along parallel to the right shoulder line. Then, in the behind-the-scenes featurette they did on that costume, there was apparently a different kind of fabric used (with the little mini-arrowheads embroidered in it), and the seam where they connected to the front chest panel is what they used for the flap alignment. Cool idea in concept with that kind of detailing on the shoulders, but I think on-camera, for the wider shots, you couldn't see the shoulder details and it just looked off.

It looked droopier than any of the maroons in The Undiscovered Country or Generations. But those were due to wear and age. The SNW maroon was on purpose.

I don't know if the shoulder textures would look as terrible if the rest of the jacket was put together better, but as it is they don't help.

That costume was such a weird choice. They could've just left the design alone and made everyone happy, but they decided to put the extra effort in and spend a little extra money so that only some people would be happy.

If they were trying to sell new action figures I'd at least understand it, but we've never had a Monster Maroon Pike figure!

"25% different"
;)

The SNW version fit properly and had a trim silhouette, unlike the original that always looked a bit like an overcoat. Some of that was choice of materials.

The revised flap was fine and really a more conventional choice in terms of line - the movie versions are oddly parallel to the shoulder. But when you change something that people are used to looking at, it appears strange to them.

The strap itself was a peculiar feature of Fletcher's design. The inspiration for these things seems to have been costume dramas about the 19th century British Navy. But making sense of labels designwise is weird anyway, once you eliminate any collar.

Question, is it likely they're going to show Pike's accident on screen again in more detail when the time comes?
I'm aware they show a vision of it on Discovery.

"Anson Mount Says ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 3 Takes “Bigger Swings” Than Musical Episode"
I admire that the series is willing to take risks and go crazy, I just hope they're doing it in a calculated and rational way. Anyone can write "Pike finds that he's the descendant of Merlin and magically transforms the crew into dogs", or whatever, but it takes skill to make the big swings actually connect.

They hit them out of the park last season.

I personally need a much better explanation for a musical episode than "We tore a hole into a dimension where everyone sings all the time," or whatever happened there. That was just terrible half-assed writing.

They did well with the animated sequence in the crossover though. "They're all on drugs" is a pretty solid explanation for any kind of weirdness.
