Given Spock is in an environment suit and the big power-cord thing is going down into the water pool... perhaps it's something more like a reactor. The life form being studied may require intense radiation to live, the water being a cooling tank.

Comparing a 442-meter SNW Enterprise to the original NX-01 and the later NX-01 Refit.

I'm not the biggest fan of a 442-meter Enterprise in this era but it does look like a more acceptable size evolution from a United Earth starship from a century earlier.

I've come to completely embrace the revised NCC-1701, particularly the larger size.

The larger size solves every single issue anyone has ever had with fitting the sets from both TOS and the films into the Enterprise. It just makes sense.

exactly, then you bump up the Excelsior to be about the same length as an Ambassador (which still has way more volume), and everything works fine
