Ngl not 100% on Spock's SNW look
Sportin' the MU chinstrap!

I think that's what the series will be: standalone episodes. That's what they were saying from the beginning that this would be a more traditional type series with standalone episodes.
Excellent news. Gives them more opportunities to be creative.

What are the odds that the crashed starship is actually the U.S.S. Defiant somehow returned from the Mirror Universe?

Would They actually have the balls to do a story like that?
:wtf:

Bottom of the saucer still doesn't have an undercut, unfortunately.

That seems more of an aesthetic choice, originally. The undercut blocks easy access to or from the innerspaces, or vice versa, by requiring transfer to a higher deck first.

As seen with the new flatter saucer bottom, that space is now habitable, and more easily crossed in either direction.

But yeah, those curves... I get it.

Everything edge etc. lighted on the bridge looks very dance-friendly

Yes, I did and I still hold to that. Pike has always been my favorite character. There is such a thing as too many legacy characters, and it diminishes my view of the whole, even if Pike is a character I have wanted a show about for a long time.

What is the crux of your opinion about why legacy characters diminish a show? Is it small universe syndrome?

It's partially small universe syndrome, but it's mostly just feels workman like, like we are hitting off the checkmarks to make sure it is "Trek Enough" to satisfy the requirements. It also creates a lot of expectations of how the characters are supposed to be rather than new characters who can be more accepted as is.

I pretty much agree. Seems fanwankerish. But — Uhura, MBenga, Chapel, heck all aside from the Big 3.5 were almost ciphers and any developing of them isn’t going to trouble much. As far as Kirk later, yup that was catnip you knew they couldn’t ignore.

Right. It is one of those things that it seems minor at first, but little things become big. Starting with Pike, Spock and Number One should have been sufficient. It wasn't. They added more. And I think it was unnecessary and now feels more checkmark rather than organic.

I don't know. I'm all for - Pike, M'Benga, No. 1, even Chapel: They're essentially blank slates with familiar names.

I don't like Uhura & Kirk there. Even Spock is only acceptable because he was in "The cage". These characters are SUPER familiar - whatever these new actors do, they will miss major parts of the original acting that defined those characters and were important for different people.

Another Kahn is just... weird & feels a bit unnecessary.

Ortega, Hemmer - other new characters? Those are actually whom I'm MOST looking forward to! Those characters will be defined by this set of nice actors for the first time. Exciting!

You say that except...there are small data points that will be held against these actors just like the familiar characters. Regardless of how brief there comes an expectation of this character to be exactly the same. Pike has managed because Mount has charmed people and there is a measure forgiveness. But, that grace is very thin, at least for me.
