Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Why are people assuming that the black doctor will be M'Benga? Booker Bradshaw was only in his twenties when he played the character in the TOS timeframe. He played a high school student on The Mod Squad, FFS!

M'Benga's dad? Maybe.

There's a lot of assumptions here around the doctor's role. I don't see the need for it to M'Benga, any more than M'Benga should be a relative of Sisko or Cartwright.

As for Bryce, Pike got through his struggles in The Cage so there is no reason for Pike to always be running to Bryce for a drink and a sulk.

But then you have Kirk often going to McCoy to use as a sounding board.
(as well as Spock)

Don't see any reason why Pike wouldn't do the same with his ships Doctor in SNW.

Number One & Spock would probably not have the same outlook as an experienced older Doc.
(or even a fairly young one with several years of StarFleet service under his belt)

Kinda-sorta makes sense to me that the writers of the show will probably have someone about Pike's age or older aboard ship for him to consult with on occasion.

That seemed to be one of Roddenberry's tenets when creating the original show.
(I believe that may have also been a driving force in replacing Crusher with Pulaski in the second season of TNG)

IMDb also reminds me that Trek was typecasting Bradshaw...he'd already played a Dr. B'Dula on a 1966 episode of Tarzan.

There is a difference between consulting with other officers, which I get, and what was directly referenced-that Boyce was critical to the scene with Pike sulking in his quarters and offering him a drink. I do not find that specific interaction to be essential to Pike as a character. I haven no problem with Pike having consultations. I will question the supposed need of mandating Boyce be a part of the show because of one scene.

Tarzan was Trek's lead-in for their shared premiere night and second seasons, so it'd be fitting if it took place in the same universe.
That Tarzan show turned me on to the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs and through that Science Fiction. Star Trek was also my gateway to Science Fiction.

Indeed. I have moved past the opinion that Star Trek is literal historical recreation of what happened and more an interpretation of the events that happened in universe. The characters and the events are more important than the technology and set pieces.

That is essentially what GR said in the Jim Kirk preface of the ST:TMP novelization. The episodes of TOS were fictionalized "recreations" of actual events taken from Kirk's logs, and the actor who played him was a much larger-than-life fugure than Kirk actually saw himself. That was GR's way of explaining why TOS and TMP looked so vastly different from one another (hello bumpy-headed Klingons). TMP was the "real" in-story universe, TOS was a TV show.

Ugh. Yeah, let's completely ignore the original actor's age and cast the 10-years-earlier version of a guy in his 20s as a guy in his 40s. Typical DiscoTrek.

Maybe they're just "visually rebooting" Boyce...

I don't see it as a mandate so much ad it would be cool to have the character apart of the show. To me he stands out more than Colt or Tyler. I mean it would be cool to see them again as well but Boyce has the drinking scene with Pike giving him a interesting personality quirk you can build on. To me it's the right kind fun service if done right

If M'Benga is the main doctor, then that would raise the question of, "Why wasn't M'Benga the Chief Medical Officer in TOS?" It's going to be someone from outside the box.

In fairness, back then an actor could've been in their 30s and still played a high school student. Like they say: There's 18 and then there's "Hollywood 18".
Yeah, but you don't a guy in his 40s as the younger version of a guy in his 20s.
