Better dialog. Better acting. More interesting background. More appealing

You must be referring to some other character than the Ortegas I’ve been seeing for three seasons. Other than the Enemy Mine ripoff, she’s done little of note other than ‘fly the ship.’

Don’t get me wrong: I think she can act, and if she was developed better and given better scripts, I think Navia would be just fine. But I’m not seeing that here.

Did you miss her entire episode with the Gorn?

I think she shines in every scene she's in. Yeah, she hasn't had too many "feature" episodes but you can show who a character is in smaller scenes as well.

Erica Ortegas leads a group of Cadets in a flying demonstration of the Kolvoord Starburst maneuver at the Starfleet Academy during a commencement ceremony....

Ortegas "dies" in that demonstration only to wake up with Trip Tucker and Tuvix standing over her as she wakes up. 'Welcome to the Mark Twain Club." Trip says. Get it! It's named after him because of his famous quote, "The reports of my death were greatly exaggerated."

"I think she should meet the Captain" Tuvix says. They escort her through corridors of a very weird and alien looking ship. Were you can see various people in clothes from different time periods and even some famous dead people like JFK, Elvis, Queen Elizabeth II and so forth. They get to a room labelled 'The Captain's Sanctuary" and enter. The Captain is looking out a window and then he turns around and it's Captain Shaw from Picard season 3! His only word is 'Nope!" Trip leans in and whispers to Ortegas 'Don't worry. He says that to all of us at first."

In adition to TOS S3 Elann of Troyius, which I mentioned above:

- TOS S1 The Corbomite Maneuver - A different points in the episode BOT Spock and Kirk give orders to Sulu to try and fly around the spinning Cube manually.

TOS S1 Where No Man Has Gone Before - In the Barrier Krik orders: "Kelso, Put it on Manual" (referring to the Helm console).

TOS S1 The Squire Of Gothos - Kirk orders Sulu to perform some very fast and somewhat wild ship maneuvers to avoid crashing into Gothos as Kirk tries to escape Trilaine and Trilaine keeps putting the planet in the ship's flight path.

TOS S2 The Ultimate Computer both Sulu and Chekov describe maneuvers that Kirk would have ordered as the M5 is piloting the ship; and in his own analysis of the M%'s performance Spock states:
"The ship reacted more rapidly than human control could have maneuvered her..."

Ortegas is written as openly defiant, disobeying orders, etc. A possible future shows that she'll basically become female Stiles. In TOS Stiles was shown to be wrong and humbled. Ortegas seems to continue to persist in her abrasiveness although maybe that Gorn episode has humbled her a bit.

Be a boring show/franchise if everyone was a boring straight arrow. Stiles? Really?
