Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

"It's going to be hard to reach the center of the galaxy in any kind of reasonable timeframe."
"Actually it's going to be super easy, barely an inconvenience."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah, they just go there in a matter of minutes."
"Oh. Wow. Are these ships just that fast?"
"I guess so."

[Six Years Later, Voyager Pitch Meeting]

"It's going to take them seventy-five years to go home? Why?"
"So the show can happen."
"But you established in the fifth movie Kirk's Enterprise could reach the center of the galaxy in mere minutes. Shouldn't this state of the art ship in The Next Generation era be able to reach one end of the galaxy to another in no time?"
"Oh. Yeah. Whoops."
"Whoopsie!"
Hell, the 1701 traverse 990.7 LY in a little over two days (See TOS S3 That Which Survives.)
^^^
Even if you discount the 30 minutes at Warp 14 and add a day (IE 3 days per 1000 LY) - even if speeds haven't increased in 100 years, the U.S.S. Voyager should have made it back in 210 days - and definitely within a year even if you add a stops along the way.

I am not in this forum enough to know if this episode gets talked about a lot, but I've been rewatching SNW to get ready for Season 3, and I'm currently on Broken Circle. This is a hell of a season premiere. I also didn't realize how much foreshadowing this had to Under the Cloak of War. This is the kind of continuation of some of Discovery's plots that I wish the series did more. It develops the characters quite a bit too, like M'Benga and Chapel.

One other thing I noticed on this rewatch, the music is great. I know the Melumad also scored Prodigy, and she really does a great job with the music. I even got to meet her briefly at a convention last year. She's really nice.

For any Canadians who may be wondering this (or even care) CTV Sci-Fi will indeed be airing S3, as they just ran a commercial within the past twenty minutes or so advertising the same July 17 date as Paramount+. I know there had been some speculation based on the official press releases for the season from Paramount not mentioning CTV Sci-Fi and the fact that they did not air Section 31. But here we are.

The first season is currently available on YouTube. Ironically enough, it's smoother to watch it on YouTube than on Paramount Plus, which glitches at least once an episode for me. The platform made for cat videos handles Star Trek better than the actual platform it's available on.

We're about to wrap up our season 2 re-watch. Either we'll watch the finale this week or we'll... WAIT. (Ugh.) And watch it as part of our Season 3 Premier.

The whole Chapel and M'Benga as Weary War Vets and M'Benga as Dr. Super Soldier were sprinkled through the season, but they were also pretty much created out of whole cloth for this season. It was interesting enough but they ramped it up pretty quickly from nothing. Better than pulling it out of their ears for Cloak of War.

I'm pretty sure that Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow has become my favorite episode of the season. Possibly the series.

OTOH I would have liked more standout Pike scenes / episodes. He took a bit of a back seat this season. His strongest episode was IMHO (oddly) Those Old Scientists.

I got to hear her on a Star Trek music panel. She sounded as excited to be there as I would be. Wow. And she does such good work.

After just seeing the season, them being war vets was introduced in the premiere, but it wasn't really addressed again until Cloak. Unless I missed something, where else was it mentioned, or referenced.

I originally didn't like the Tomorrow episode, but that was something that was woven throughout the season. I think of all the regulars on this series, La'an has actually become my favorite and that episode being kind of a springboard to get her to come out of her shell was something I liked this season. It's interesting too in that I don't like the idea that Kirk is in this series as much as he has been.

Among the Lotus Eaters - Pike brings M'Benga along for his combat skills. M'Benga is not happy about it. Also M'Benga trains with La'an in Tomorrow ^ 3. And beats her.

You can even read the line in Subspace Rhapsody: "Death threats are nothing new to us" as a reference. (There is a lot of too over the top language in the lyrics of SSR. Even in SNW, let alone TOS, I wouldn't say Uhura's whole life was "fix this and save you".)

Ok, I do remember but I didn't make the war connection. Also, Lotus Eaters was kind of an average episode so maybe that's why I forgot so easily.

This afternoon I saw an ad for the new streaming season of SNW during the CBS game show Let's Make a Deal.
