In the 1970s when TAS was made, everyone still thought the world was made up entirely of white men, and thus Robert April was drawn to reflect this belief. In the 2020s people responsible for casting on SNW realized there was more to the world than just white men and cast an actor to play Robert April that reflected this reality.

That's all the explanation you need.

Maybe. But I don't think that was the reason why SNW cast a black actor for a character previously shown on screen to be white. I think it was simply that TAS has always been flip-flopping in the canonicity department.

Any ideas on how SNW will explain why Admiral April changed so much physically to match the Animated Show? I was thinking that he suffered a freak accident and ended up stuck that way.

The Animated Star Trek show is canon according to Lower Decks. And this is Star Trek where freak accidents happen a lot.

TAS is not canon. You know. Kind of like Discovery.

Or they didn't cared that he was white in TAS and cast the actor they wanted. Not sure the canon status of TAS was even in the picture.

That's possible too, since adherence to 'canon' is not CBS's strong suit. Not that that means that I have a problem that they cast a black actor for the role. I could care less about that. My point was that it was doubtful that TAS was even on their radar. So yeah, I agree. Now with that said, would they have cast a black actor for Pike, or Kirk? Doubtful.

The problem is, if we can't even guarantee that prime universe characters look something like the actors who play them, how can we be sure of (the facts of) anything?

At least if it was a different universe, where anything is possible...that's why people decide it is. It makes more sense that this is a universe where someone's circumstances are different, than that it's the same universe as the one we already saw.

Very doubtful.
