Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I just marathoned the first season of strange new worlds. And like all of new trek. I hate it. It's just so mediocre. All flash, no heart, no soul. My biggest problem is with captain pike himself. He's a pussy. There are no other words to better describe him, than being a pussy. He's emotionally weak and weak of character. And let's others walk all over him. Dont get me wrong his physical stature is adequate. But his presence is not commanding like a captain's should be. I have no respect for him. I liked him on discovery(which was the only thing I actually liked about discovery). But here on his own show. I feel like they've neutered him on purpose. For humiliation. Like he cant be strong like previous captains were. (My favorite trek overall was TOS. Because it felt like an adventure in space. I felt like the crew actually respected captain kirk. I liked TNG season 1 because it felt like TOS. But season 2 onwards TNG devolved into pretentious technobabble. DS9 is my second favorite series. Solely for sisko aka space shaft. Voyager felt pointless. Enterprise wasn't bad. But not worth it. Only jeffrey combs as shram redeemed that series.) I dont like any of the bridge crew either. They're forgettable. Spock is ok but feels forced. Like ethan peck was not allowed to do his own take on spock. Instead he's pigeon holed. Fells like he's just imitating leonard nimoy at times. (Zachary quinto's spock felt too emotional for me.) And there is an overall lack of adventure. Going places doing things. The first episode was fine. But every episode after that felt mid. Except for the first servant episode. I liked how they couldn't save the day in that one. All the other episodes from season 1 felt like I'd already seen them before in other series. No take was original. It's like they recycled old episodes and ideas and put a new coat of pain. I did like the episodic nature of SNW though.

P.S. How the hell can you have a visually impaired engineer? The concept is cool but it becomes too unbelievable, too immersion breaking.
The misogyny in this post is breathtaking. Keep this crap up and your duration here will be pretty short. Oh, and there’s a bit of trolling too.

Episode 3 has accidentally appeared on American Amazon Prime early (it has Paramount+ channel)
Can confirm, I just watched it by signing up for a free trial of P+ through Amazon. As is typical of time travel episodes I'll need to watch again to full understand but it was a solid entry for sure.

Just a heads up, if you attempt to cancel your subscription through Paramount+ they'll offer to give you two months free.

Can you PM me the summary of the episode? Or anyone else who's seen it?

Hmmm. Let's see. TOS Pilot Pike threatens to resign his Starfleet commission and run off to one of the Orion colonies whereas SNW Pike who's five to six years older and more mature actually views his actions in a wider context and doesn't completely overreact when he makes an error in judgment, weighing both the good and the bad and hoping that the next time will have better results. Which one is the more interesting character?

It's easier to scream that something sucks if you don't bother to even try to appreciate it. It's always easier and thus always less easy to take seriously.
In fairness, Cage-Pike was still lamenting and mourning the deaths of 3 of his crew and 7 injured during some kind of battle on Rigel VII with the indigenous beings there. I get the impression that this may have been the first time he lost anyone during a mission and it shook him hard, as it would any ship commander. It's all well and good to receive immense amounts of leadership training to prepare someone for that scenario, but no element of preparation will mitigate all the emotional impact of such a loss. I suspect it might give even a Vulcan some pause.

So, could he have handled it better? Perhaps. I'm not going to ding him for that, though. I just didn't much like Cage-Pike's general demeaner throughout the episode. He was kind of a block of wood. He and Chakotay would have gotten along swimmingly. Mount's Pike, however, is hugely likable, compassionate, relatable and a sympathetic character. Polar opposites, really. Greenwood's Pike is a bit in between the two, but leaning a tad-closer to Mount's Pike. IMO, of course.

Pike isn't emasculated because he likes to cook for the crew. Sisko did that. Riker did that once also, though everyone hated his food except Worf. While he has a more relaxed, Ted Lasso, type of style compared to the one we see in 'The Cage." their is no reason to think that this change might have come from him wanting to spend, what he knows is a shorter life than he would have normally, basically enjoying his friends and command.

Learning the lesson Picard didn't learn until the final scene/poker game on TNG. His style also has lots in common with another fellow CANNON TREK CAPTAIN in Ed Mercer.

Nobody's being freakin' emasculated...

Except Worf, maybe, every time they ran into the uber-powerful alien intruder of the week that seemed to always be able to toss him about like a ragdoll. He was always designed to be the litmus test for badassery on the E-D.

Worf was also comic relief lots of the time and they always needed someone to voice the unpopular opinion. It would be like " Lets talk peace with the new aliens" and Worf for the sake of conflict has to take the "No way. Let's fight them" point of view. Then he gets shut down and Picard and everyone smiles and is like "Oh Worf. You and your silly ideas" and Worf is basically sitting their in a huff and frowning, which as we know is the Klingon version of rolling your eyes at something you think is really stupid.

Worf would finally get to do some real kicking ass when he went to DS9. Of course we are ignoring one other important issue and that is some guys like the feeling of emasculation. Do I need to write some Fan fiction about the adventures of Captain Boy Toy and his Romulan Queen and all the fun they have after she conquers his ship in order to punish all the puny Earth men aboard?

I just watched the first two episodes of the second season. And I have to say that while yes it was much improved. That's only because pike was reduced to effectively a background character in those first two episodes. The first episode had pike ushered out of the action and spock took the helm. And I liked that. It gave ethan peck more head room to play spock while still channeling leonard nimoy, but not being constricted to playing spock as nimoy may have. Drunk spock is fun spock. I wish it was explored more. The first episode felt like something out of TOS or DS9. Wild and adventurous.

The second episode was a court room drama. It was ok. But not as good as the first episode. Pike started showing some balls, but that was only when he was pushed. I liked that. But it felt too reactionary. I prefer my captains proactive over reactive. Best part of the episode was when the admiral was getting grilled on the stand by oona's lawyer.

I'm cautiously optimistic for episode 3.

He's a pussy.
have you ever come across a pussy? the vagina is one of the most powerful organs one can come across. you realize vaginas can start revolutions and end wars, right? even on a physical level the vagina is one of the strongest things that have ever existed. virtually indestructible. many men might have tales of how they once defeated the pussy. let me tell you now, they have not. the owner of the pussy might have given you the impression, that you defeated the pussy, but it is alive and well, my friend.
you realize human beings come out of a vagina? and still it continues to work as intended. do you understand how impressive that is? you descibe pussies as weak? a human came out of a vagina...you just sit on a penis wrong and it breaks.
so, don't be a penis.
