"Being unrecognizable" could be open to interpretation. It could mean he's playing another alien, or it could mean he's human and the audience isn't expected to know what he actually looks like.

Why?

He's just an actor, no different from anyone else. Besides, I'm under the impression it was the plan the whole time, as if Bruce Horak was into it from the start. I think he even mentioned doing another role in that episode of The Ready Room that aired after Hemmer's death.

I mean as a disabled person myself, if you aren't seeing the optics on what looks like a firing of a disabled cast member who's seemingly done nothing wrong, then I'm not sure what else to say. The reveal that this was the plan and he was slated to return only came later.
