Well, as Spock was part of both sets of crews, he can be cooler than his future self.
We already know Kirk's ladies man reputation (even though if you count the number of times he actually got together with any women on TOS it's far fewer than one's been led to believe), but let me guess: people asked Uhura on dates, even turning down groups of Deltans and Orion women using their pheromones to do so!
Anyway if you think about it, Pike does seem very uncool. The guy's obviously a glutton for punishment. He goes on three 5 year missions in a row (talk about workaholic), even when he's outright shown staying in Starfleet ends badly for him. He pines over some girl he only met once and is totally ok with her getting together with a fake version of him. Dr. Boyce seems to think that alcohol consumption is a form of therapy.
And Number One--well I mean, aside from her creeping out Spock on his first visit and creating disturbing Starfleet loyalty tests as seen in Short Treks, look what she demands everyone call her! That's right, she demands they call her Number One. She's clearly disturbed.
Pike is cool. He's just Tom Hanks. Kirk is Tom Cruise! One turns the ship lights off at night because it's the crews bedtime. Kirk has the crew partying all night long. One makes sure the environment is professional but conservative with crew attire. Kirk has the crew rocking mini skirts and loves to go around without a shirt. One spends a quiet evening in his quarters watching television. Kirk is working on his hard body making sure it stays tight in the gym.

True. Then again, if I'm as active as Shatner is at 89, I'm not going to care if I was a little pudgy.
Hard to believe he’s going to be 90 next February. I’ve literally never seen anyone his age so thoroughly active.

I don't know if this was mentioned or not in the thread, but, on the recent Mission Log podcast, Rod Roddenberry actually dropped some teases about the show.
According to Roddenberry they are looking at some "good characters that you all know and love that will probably make an appearance." If the video doesn't go directly to that spot, it's at 40:19.
He also goes into a little detail prior to that about the inception of the series and how he was just one of several people talking with Kurtzman about how something more should be done with Pike.

I can see Kirk and Number One having a rivalry or romance. Both want to command the Enterprise after Pike leaves. We know Kirk will get the job but then what happens to Number One. I think it would be a good thing if her fate was less predicable than someday being a captain in Starfleet. That's what everyone expects or sort has assumed for decades as to what must have happened to her at some point. Why not do something creative and surprising.

I just hope it's after the first season. Of course, it could lead to another spin-off about Kirk's early days before the Enterprise. Or just roll right into a new TOS series with new Kirk actor and Ethan Peck about the missions we didn't see in the original.
Reveal that her full name is Una Harris and give her command of the USS Excalibur. After that, fans will be advised in an aftershow to go watch TOS: The Ultimate Computer.
