Here's the thing-when old Trek did these types of story it was classic. When nu Trek does it it is disrespectful of Trek's legacy. I trust you see the difference.

I see that I clearly don't take enough illicit substances to make any of this logical.
Jeffrey Hunter’s Pike was unlikable AF, always shouting and threatening, super condescending and cold toward women, never showed the slightest interest in Vina except when she was a slave animal woman. “I’m filling my mind with hate” — was altogether too invested. No wonder they fired him.
Logic is the beginning of wisdom not the end. And really has no place in fandom
His wife being difficult to work with might have had something to do with it too...
Also, Pike was clearly struggling. A man of sorrows, one might say. He certainly livened up a little bit throughout the episode.

I can see people tiring of the writers constantly leaning on elements over and over. Though the log cabin motif likely fits Pike and Riker (who we know is an outdoorsman who grew up in Alaska) far more than it did Kirk or Picard.
Picard ended up on his family's Vineyard, running it and producing wine.
As far as Captain James T Kirk, the cabin didn't show up until ST:Generations,, and that was because William Shatner like to ride horses and they decided to let him ride a horse on screen for his final feature film appearance as Captain Kirk. The only other house she had before then was an apartment overlooking San Francisco Bay.
And as others have said oh, if there is one Star Trek Captain character where a cabin in the woods really fits; that would be Captain Christopher Pike. So no, I don't have an issue with them showing Pike in the mountains living in a log cabin knowing that in 10 to 12 years he's going to be a physical cripple confined to a wheelchair.
10 or 12? More like 5 or 6.
I don't have a problem with Pike in a cabin, but I can see how others could grow tired of reusing the element.

If they want to show Pike really sad he needs to be seen waking up from having passed out in his bathroom with vomit on him and in full tears crying out 'I don't want to die, i don't want to die" over and over. He then pulls a bottle of Saurian Brandy he keeps hidden behind his toilet and opens it up and drinks it all in one scoop.
Christian Slater had a cameo in STVI because his mother was the casting director. Seth MacFarlane had hardly acted in anything when he appeared in Enterprise (he was mostly known as a writer). Dwayne Johnson was The Rock, and only known for wrestling when he appeared in Voyager. Stephen Hawking and Mae Jameson didn't commanding huge salaries for their appearances. Joe Piscopo was just an SNL alum whose career was about to head downhill. etc...
Kelsey Grammer is really the only "big name" star there, considering when all those episodes were made.
They should show Pike freebasing Jewels of Sound. Make it a deep cut.
Of course, he bought them from Scotty.

Voyager had a lot more. Andy Dick, Sarah Silverman, Jason Alexander, etc.
