Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Akiva Goldsman gives some interesting tidbits to the Hollywood Reporter:

thank you for posting that. I used to dislike Goldsman because I thought most of his movie scripts were mediocre. But seeing that he is just a trekkie like us who is having the time of his life writing/directing/showrunning Trek shows, now I like him.

Interesting that Picard started as a Short Trek, hadn’t heard that before.

I am disappointed they didn’t ask him about the Ringworld series he is supposed to be working on.

He seems like a mensch, but I am really nervous about his direction of the SNW pilot, considering how terribly he directed the penultimate episode of Picard.

I’d still go with emissary or caretaker, then farpoint personally. Caretaker in particular has a lot of new fx stuff happening, whereas emissary is both a contained story and a pilot, with decent set ups for almost everyone. Also.. wolf 359.
Honestly, EAF was an absolute snoozefest with some really interesting character introductions. Although I was all of 3 years old when it premiered :D

the uniforms have been adjusted slightly, the sets are slightly different. Remember the Enterprise existed as a little piece of [the show Discovery] but now its its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of The Original Series, that's what we're looking to do.

Please change those asymmetrical collars.

My favourite TOS inspired uniforms are the ones from Beyond, those ones were a perfect update imo.

Heh, so according to that interview, Akiva originally thought Discovery Season 1 was going to be about Pike because of the time frame. It sounds like he was the one to push having Pike and the Enterprise show up in the series.

Given this statement: "You know, Picard wasn't supposed to be a series. It was just a one-off scene in a Short Trek. He wasn't even going to be played by Patrick Stewart." I think Kurtzman dodged a number of fan rage bullets by making the decision he did
I think it was meant to be a young Picard story where he meets with Uhura
https://blog.trekcore.com/2020/01/star-trek-picard-connections-nichelle-nichols-uhura-idea/

"So, at the very, very beginning, we were talking about ‘Short Treks’ for the first time, and what kind of stories you could tell — and we were actually beginning with an Uhura story, and the idea was that we very much wanted to see we could bring Nichelle [Nichols] back in at this point in time, and then see what kind of stories [Uhura] might tie in to. And then Patrick’s name came into the mix, and could we get him, would he be interested… so the very first idea was a meeting between Uhura and Picard — a very, very young Picard.

The original idea was that a young Picard had been called to a hospital where Uhura had a mission for him, and it was related to the Borg."
