I gave this a 3 of 1 (makes no sense), or would would be an 8 out of 10. Great pilot and introduction to the cast. Had some moments that made me smile and chuckle. It was fun. I can't wait to see more. Yea a few nitpicks I noticed while watching that have been mentioned here - Spock getting to the ship fast - of course that could be handwaved that the ship left later than the next day but also seems weird that they would hold off the rescue just to wait for Spock. The clothes being added to the transporter stream, the eyedrop being transported to Spock's eye.

Also, how did Nurse Chapel have the DNA of the alien race in order to disguise Pike, Spock, La'an? Any explanation to this that I missed?

Ok someone needs to explain why the poll score has been reversed! a 1 is now considered excellent? Since WHEN?! Why did this stupid change occur?
Got a link to that command? Because its frakking stupid and now confuses me! Its like if the GOP decided to change the rules all of a sudden and make polls in their favor by reversing the score system. WARN US NEXT TIME YOU IDIOTS!!!
You KNOW what I mean by "command". If you NEED me to clarify, I meant ANNOUNCEMENT as to reversing the scoring system. Not sure WHY you need to be so sarcastic in your reply, since you obviously knew what I meant to begin with, but frankly I don't appreciate your attitude with me. I think it stinks and needs to be corrected. Period. So ease up on it.
Why don't you stop encouraging this stupidity that the owners and mods decided to throw upon us? WE KNOW WHAT YOu'RE ALL DOING YOU IDIOTS!!!
Hey, how about you explain this idiotic reversal of the scoring system! It personally offends and bothers me and frankly I think whoever it is you're employed by needs to get a frakkin' reality check into acting like a professional! You enable this stupid shit, and you're part of the problem, got it?!
So you're just trying to keep me pissed, huh? Keep at it, I'll go off on you pal!
You REALLY want to keep trolling, moderator? Keep at it, I'll just go harder.
I DESERVE MODERATOR STATUS OVER YOU!!!
Oh believe me, I'll BE that guy that breaks you!
Also, you seem to escalate rather than de-escalate,which means you don't deserve to be a moderator. Resign or I'll have you ejected.
Yeah speaking of which, why the hell didn't you all alert us to the stupid ass reversal? See I wouldn't be HAVING A PERSONAL OFFENSE TO THIS SITUATION if you all answered ME at a timely manner, which you didn't In fact, that other so called "moderator" who looks even younger than ME ignored me, so I DEMAND you answer!
No, I'm VERY irritated! JUST below simmering in terms of anger, but above agitated.
Why is no one else irritated by the sudden scoring system change? Honestly, I'm surprised by the passive reaction to all this. How does this not bother you at all? And why don't we deserve an explanation for the change? We all know that 10/10 means excellent, so why is it NOW 1/10 and so accepted quickly? Why wasn't it even announced or discussed to begin with? That pissed me off because to me a 10 means excellent, and even though I didn't score it a 10, I did score it high through the old scoring system, only to be told it meant I was voting it as being bad. That's some bullshit!
To who? I'm complaining in general about this change and it frustrates the hell out of me! I'm sure I'm not the only one, but goddamn it felt like I was being cheated when I went to vote. I went for a 9/10 THINKING it was great, not the best, and SUDDENLY the system went a full 180 stating I was voting it as being the second worst rating. I don't know why, but it just pisses me off having that kind of change without notice. It feels like a robbery of my honesty. I dunno. I'm sorry if I seem overzealous of it all, I just feel like we were being robbed of our votes with the reversal.
Ridicule all you like, you KNOW I'm right dude! Whoever made this thread and did that reversal shit, did so deceivingly and intended for us to have it poll as being near the worst premiere for a rating system. Its some deceiving bullshit! I recommend for a future rule that if a thread like this is made, it goes by a common rating system with the other show threads and posts. Don't differentiate the system and deceive us that want to rate honestly.
It's NOT trivial when it matters to ratings etc. This thread is likely monitored by rating system companies that keep tabs on the likes of social media etc that discuss in Star Trek. If such deceptions like that happen, it affects how the true ratings are.
Is it so hard to ask to stay with the regular system? I'm not sure why I even NEED to do so when it should be obvious, and yet somehow....here we are! Just stop defending this!

Jesus Christ, dude. I can't tell if this is serious or MODMAN 2.0 taking the piss. The staff had nothing to do with the poll, and there was no coordinated effort to confuse anyone or manipulate the super-important voting that gets tabulated by Paramount and determines whether the show gets a third season or not. It was just an accidental reversal of the scoring on the OP's part. Which, by the way, you can notice by reading the poll before voting, or if you missed that, by changing your vote after the fact. Certainly didn't justify all of this nonsense.

‪‪‪‪I loved Spock and Pike’s converstion where they mentioned missing Michael, and seeing them dealing with consequences of the DSC S02 finale. And Pike’s dismisal of calling General Order 1 the Prime Directive with “that’ll never stick,” made me smile.

I really liked the scenes with T'Pring. Unlike since DS9, I think they really got the Vulcans right this time. And T'Pring is just as sharp as she was in TOS.

The size of the shuttlecraft as it passes over the saucer section seems to indicate a scale of closer to 300 meters but I know CBS would say otherwise. No matter what she's a LOT smaller than either of Picard's Enterprises.

Pike's quarters are clearly towards the front of the saucer, to the sides of the lounge. With those windows, it gives us a fairly easy way to extrapolate the size of the ship.

Your rage is misdirected. I created the topic, and made the error with no help from staff.

It's not an error, just a different way to do it. Took me a second to realise.

As an aside, I think it'd be better to use words instead of numbers, because one person's 7 out of 10 might mean something very different than another person's. If the scale is "Hated it; disliked it; Meh; it was OK; liked it; loved it; it was AMAZING!", for instance, it would avoid interpretation.

Wow, that was excellent. I'm always down for more episodic exploration Trek, even if I would prefer it to be in the 25th century and onward rather than another prequel.

Also, nice lore dump there about the Second American Civil War, the Eugenics War, and World War III all happening at pretty much the same time. New death numbers too, 30% of Earth's population, so at least 2 billion dead from those conflicts together. I wonder if the 600 million number was from just the nuclear strikes?

It's an error in the sense that I'd have done it the other way if I'd looked a bit more closely at the poll I used as a model. I don't pay much attention to episode polls ordinarily, and included one here because I figured it was expected.

Because the person who created it (who isn't a Mod) didn't realize till it was too late that he'd reversed the scale.
Ah, got it. Thx for pointing out my error, I thought it was intentional, as it was sometimes in the past.
God forbid someone makes a Human Error occasionally.
Indeed.

ETA: I now read some rather rude complaints about the ratings reversal, so I understand where your tone was coming from. It's hard to keep up with these threads.

A big thumbs up, and I actually enjoy Trek ... all of it. I haven't laughed at a (non-LDS) episode like this in awhile. It really was time for something that uses all the Trek tropes correctly, and takes them seriously enough. Ethan Peck is a standout. No Pike/Spock slash allowed! ("Spock ... are you naked?")

The comfort food is safely returned to the buffet.

Damn. I clicked on eight, not reallzing it was a low score....

Anyway, I loved it. It was fun to watch. Reminded me of that cabin Kirk had in the Nexus.

A REDO is allowed in this particular case.
Click on the rectangle on the lower right and change it. :techman:

Probably not new news, but the poll numbers are backwards FYI ;)

On to better things. The absolute best first episode of any Star Trek series? Absolutely.

As much as I like the other series' and their arced approaches, it's nice to get back to something that isn't in a constant state of trying to set up and maintain that arc. (Though we had some level of setup in DSC S2, so there's that)

One thing that's just not to my liking is how the bridge is lit up with lights, its just an aesthetic I dont care for but thats it
How else would you light it up if not with lights? Or did you mean, the specific way in which they did this?

For myself, my only criticisms are the use of Jan 6. imagery, which is too current and divisive for my tastes, and the fact that I have no clue how these aliens could possibly reverse engineer warp technology based on a distant observation of an event, the meaning of which they couldn't possibly have understood.

And also the communicators shouldn't make that noise when beeping a call. Damn, that's a minor one!

The beaming-instant-gene-therapy-into-Spock was a WTF? moment for me, but I got past it real quick.
I liked the idea that the transporter can just change your clothes and put equipment on your belt. Makes sense, although it does, like the rest of that tech (and the replicators) have implications that Trek will definitely never address.

The vial wasn’t re-materialized obviously…. It stayed in the pattern buffer.
You are a genius.

Though just in this episode, there's some fudging of Trek canon going on, by seemingly merging the Eugenics Wars with World War III.

I think they mean one led to the other, but I'd have to watch it again... which I will.

My other very small quibble was Uhura saying "cool" at the end.

I can definitely imagine Nichelle Nichols saying it. :)
