Gave it a 2nd place only because I want to save some room for the rating to go up in a future episode. I absolutely loved it. Quippy fun, serious character moments, a little action, and an unmissable political statement. Reminds me of a show called Star Trek.
Also: "deflector shields" and "scanners." We don't hear those enough in Modern Trek. It's usually "shields" and "sensors." This series is definitely going back to some of the TOS terminology and I like it.
I enjoyed it. There was a whole lot for me to like, and overall, it was a super fun start to the show.
Was a bit surprised to see Pike’s in a relationship with Wynnona Earp, but it’s a welcome one. I’d read on the General SNW thread that
an advance review said Pike was married, but I didn’t get that feeling from this scene, just that they’re together. I wonder if the reviewer just made that assumption based on the cabin scene this episode, or if it’s something established/made explicit in the next four episodes.
Loved April, he was great, and looked rad in that uniform at the end. And Sam! Doesn’t look *quite* enough like Paul Wesley with a mustache, but I’ll deal All the new characters are interesting, and these versions of Pike, Una and Spock continue to entertain, and grow even better and more engaging.
I loved Spock and Pike’s converstion where they mentioned missing Michael, and seeing them dealing with consequences of the DSC S02 finale. And Pike’s dismisal of calling General Order 1 the Prime Directive with “that’ll never stick,” made me smile.
The relationship had the feel of the one that Jonathan Archer and Erika Hernandez had. Two Captains attracted to one another and drawn together by shared risks and mutual interests.

T'Pring knew Pike well enough to call him "Chris." Also, since the wedding proposal happened in this episode I guess this helps set up the seven-year gap until they again meet for the Koon-ut-kalifee ceremony. She eventually tires of Spock always galivanting across the galaxy and contacts Stonn.
