In the episode Beta Test, when we see the Doctor talking with Chan Ake about mucus, we can see a graphic showing the number of levels, sublevels, and decks for the Athena. There are 10 levels, 8 sublevels, and 34 decks. I don't know how all this works.

While we are talking about the Athena, I do find that the opening shots of San Francisco interesting at the beginning of Beta Test. We see ships hovering over the water, maybe a Mars class ship near the city. There are many smaller ships moving through the water, including a ship which looks something like a 21st century American warship. Some of these aerial and water vehicles appear in the next episode.

The only really decent side view of Athena is just before their departure from the shipyard. If we assume the Atrium is just above the deflector array, and it goes straight up, it would hit the top of the saucer at the back of the saucer dome. So either we do have two atriums, or the atrium is going full on "Tower of Piza" inside the neck and saucer.

And if we use that to get our deck charts, it does suggest a minimum of twenty decks in the atrium, but it looks much less in the internal shot. From the scale of the airlock, the saucer rim itself may be 3 or 4 decks.

Reminds me somewhat of the Thesus from the IDW comics Trek series, especially from the first angle.

Thanks for posting these! Was wondering if the designer would post concept sketches somewhere eventually. And these are great!

It’s so interesting to learn what some of the design influences and touchpoints have been for Lee Fitzgerald. Can definitely see how the wings of Athena’s owl found their way to the ship …

And how parametric architecture (had to look that up) inspired the design for the organic ceiling windows on top of the saucer …

And now that he mentions that it contains “lots of little references here to [his] favourite Trek design, the Enterprise Refit from TMP“ I can definitely see it! The angled elements on the ends of the nacelles look very similar, but also the windows and lines on the saucer rim, the impulse drive, and the darker area on the neck plus the docking ring. Nice!

Lee Fitzgerald goes on to say “I produced a lot of images for Athena (including a full internal deck plan blockout)” and I hope we’ll get those soon! Especially that deck plan should be interesting.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around the exact design of the warp nacelles, especially towards the front section. So I isolated them in this rendering to get a better feel for them, but they still look very mysterious to me somehow.

Genuinely considering the dorsal view as a tattoo.
Cool idea! How detailed would you go? Just the silhouette or with some of the hull details? :)

Thank you for this! I can now adequately picture in my head in 3D how the nacelles are designed enough to build them myself :D
