Spoilers Starfleet Academy Episode Preview Thread

I think the best story would be that SAM discovers Sisko never returned from the wormhole and was taken away from his family forever so that she can really learn what it means to appreciate living in the moment as organics don't know how much time they have left and so in order for her people to truly reconnect with organics like they want they have to view each moment as precious just like they do.
You really believe Tawney would disrespect Avery Brooks wishes like that? :vulcan:

Given that Sisko's fate is a mystery it can be comfortably ruled out that he returned to Starfleet duty if he ever did return. I'm okay with this because for me personally, no one has been able to write that in a satisfying way.

I'm more open to the idea that he returned and lived off the grid but him deciding to abandon his duties as emissary and a starfleet officer is something I will need to be persuaded on. But I do offer myself to be persuaded.

Tackling this story will not be easy and while I do have faith in Beyer and Newsome as two very passionate fans themselves I'm also a deep lover of DS9 and the tragedy of its finale is so beautiful that I don't want it cheapened. What You Leave Behind makes me cry every time and as someone who grew up in a single parent household it always prompts me to immediately check in with my dad and make sure he's okay. The finale reminds us to cherish the moments we have and hold on to those we care about while we have them and Sisko returning and just living happily every after is less comparible with that message when done clunkily.

I know this can be a point of contention, especially for those who view it as a racial stereotype and not the same way I do, so I do make the promise in writing that I will be absorbing this episode with an open mind.

The story should always take priority.
That has never been how it works.

Sisko's fate is a mystery to the public of the 32nd century.

Forgive me it is extremely late in my time zone so I may not be clocking something but you quoted me and then just repeated what I said. That doesn't compute.
The public of the 32nd century not knowing that Sisko returned to Starfleet doesn't mean Sisko didn't return to Starfleet.

Why would starfleet academy teaching starfleet history keep a starfleet officer's service a secret from starfleet cadets? Unless he operated in secret as a section 31 agent that doesn't make any sense.

Avery Brooks has been on the record of not liking the finale's implication that Sisko would end up being an absent father for his children because he felt it would send a bad message in the face of the positive representation of Black fatherhood Ben and Jake showed for seven seasons. While it makes good sense in-universe, I'd agree with Brooks' stance.

There are any number of reasons from tradition, to protection, to classified action, to whatever reasonable reason there might be.

I certainly understand his stance and it's sad it sours the finale for him. Single fathers of any race are often quite overlooked and Sisko is such a wonderful example, as I said growing up in a single parent household Ben and Jake's relationship really resonates with me and episodes like Explorers tug at the heartstrings.

Maybe in some weird way that's why I don't share the stance because I have such a strong investment in Sisko as a single dad that I dont always see the Black fatherhood side of it. I am the type who leads with my heart after all.

Whatever they do will be 100 times better than what happened to Sisko in the novelverse.
