Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

We've had several gay characters in STD. No one cared. The hate mail over Jeri Ryan's character was after her character was established and a lot of fanboys at the time who idolized her were probably angry that they were going to make her a lesbian while thinking she was heterosexual for a couple years. So it ruined their stupid fantasy. Lol. Hate over a black woman? But no hate over Avery Brooks as I recall. I think Michael Burnham was hated because she committed mutiny the first episode not because she was a black woman.
They didn't make her a lesbian...

Everyone knows their is lots of online bigotry and in fact their is a whole content industry on catering to those feelings. Star Trek shows is just one of their many targets. At the same time studios are not a bunch innocent lamb being led to online slaughter. They will use this online hate factory to hide from real criticism and not take no responsibility for their creative mistakes. That is because nobody wants to be fired and everyone wants a new job even after their current project fails.

It's basically all capitalism. A game that everyone is playing and nobody is above criticism for all the mistakes and failure going on in Hollywood despite with the blame pointing and virtue singling. This is why I take all this online fighting in stride and try to ignore pretty much all of it. I make my judgments with my own eyes in terms of whether or not I think something is good or not.

Ahmed Best and Jake Lloyd were bullied the fuck out of when the prequels came out.

Jake Lloyd was completely fine for the role he was given (as he wasn't even the lead of TPM - that was clearly Neeson/McGregor.

Though someone at the time mentioned Haley Joel Osment would've been a better Anakin, which I haven't been able to get out of my head for decades.

They should have never shown Darth Vadar as a kid. Should have been a teen from the start. The movies could have shown him from teen to young adult to middle aged adult.

9-year-old Anakin being so kindhearted and generous definitely makes his fall to the Dark Side that much more catastrophic in feel. You feel like so much more has been lost when you see Anakin as a compassionate slave child dreaming of ending the system that spawned his living conditions.

You said something similar the other day that let me think you weren’t doing conventions anymore. As someone who just started visiting conventions within the last 15 years or so, I can only implore you to attend one again, because they still are super fun and it’s always interesting meeting and talking to other fans, being awkward together, celebrating Trek. :)

Conventions still have a great many of fun people to talk with and exchange great ideas of various shows.

In some ways, it's like being a kid again and you found the best playground in town.

I haven't seen a pure star trek convention in my area in years. I even have my own original series uniform. It seems only comic cons and those while fun are so big that star trek gets lost in the sea. I once met Nichelle Nichols when I was a kid ar a creation sponsored star trek con. I mentioned that before. She was the one star trek cast member that I got the closet to to be able to shake her hand and get an autograph. She even initiated conversation. Way different times for trek. There was tng and the movies as well but it was still much smaller than today.

I wish they were in my area. You guys have me thinking about the old days now. Lol

Right. But from what im hearing at the time they were considering it and fans got mad. Im just going off of what others have said here. They of course did on Picard. I can't stand Raffi though. Terribly written character. Shes a 21st century person caught in the 25th century. Lol

Maybe it's partly because I have a vast array of shows I love (STAR TREK, FARSCAPE, BABYLON 5, THE X-FILES, FOUNDATION, FIREFLY, THE TWILIGHT ZONE, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, SLIDERS, STARGATE, and a lot more), but I've had no problem finding fans of all types and having great conversations and a lot of fun. DragonCon is the one I've gone to the most, with a few others here and there.

Haven't done a Comic Con, like San Diego... kind of glad I haven't, to be honest. From what I have heard, it seems more like herding cattle than a full on ecperience chatting with actors. DragonCon and others like it are more fan oriented than corporate oriented, if that makes sense. (Don't really have a better way to describe what I mean.) I've met hundreds of actors and actresses, and I've gotten to have some really great conversations with them.

Tony Todd was awesome... we were chatting for close to a half hour. Jason Carter (Marcus from BABYLON 5)... SUPER fun and just a ball of energy, truly delightful. Todd Stashwick... chill, fun guy, great to talk with. Amanda Tapping... lovely woman, so delightful and easy to chat with. Great hugger, too. Jonathan Frakes... funny guy, and easy to talk with. Truly a guy to just go have some beers with. Richard Hatch... TRULY loved being with fans. Talked for quite a while. He was gracious enough to let me bring him on an online chat with an old BSG group I was part of... said he was able to do about an hour. He decided to stay longer and was talking and answering questions for over 2 and a half hours!

My point is if you are able to go to one, it's totally worth the experience and memories. And you'll find other fans and connect with them. It's a great way to meet like minded people.

Lucas did have a reason for making him so young. He had to be an age where being pulled from his mother would be a really big deal for him.

If he was older though that stuff about him being to old to train would make more sense IMO. They could have had his mom die in child birth so he could have been someone who never had a real family growing up, thus making him easier to manipulate with Palpatine being a father figure to him.

i wonder if star trek starfleet academy will get renewed for season 3

Not likely. The new owners will likely want to do their own thing with new people they select. Especially with Ellison in charge. I feel like Starfleet Academy would have to be a huge success to get renewed. Even a modest success wouldn't be enough. Kurtzman's contract also ends at the end of 2026. Not sure they would renew again like they did in 2021. Might also be why Academy was given two years. Those two years end when his contract ends. Assuming they are already filming season 2. It's as if Academy was his big shot to prove to the new owners he should be renewed again after 2026.

They already finished filming Season 2.

And it apparently ends on a giant cliffhanger.

Ah. They added the cliffhanger in hopes to force a 3rd season. Lol. Well with the acquisition of warner bros(not finalized yet) paramount may not care. Paramount will own everything on HBO including the game of thrones franchise which sorry to say is far superior to the writing on kurtzman trek. I suspect we will not get much new trek after SNW and SFA end their currently filmed runs.

No more Trek sounds ok.

God I hope it isn't a cliffhanger. Sort of a dick move when you know you might not get a season 3. But I guess I do see the logic in that you might hope it might be enough to get a season 3.

At this point I agree. I was watching House of the Dragon last night. Hadn't seen it yet. The writing is so much more interesting than what we are getting from trek. Its too violent at times but the writing is very good. I'm hear the knights of the seven kingdoms is even better. Paramount will own it all now. Oh yeah also The Sopranos and Curb your Enthusiasm. Hard to believe..
