Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

It's also amazing that someone can find out the exact viewing figures of something from a global streaming service to be able to make what is surely a genuine point and not just some futile attempt to rally hate for a show without any legitimate criticisms. No one would ever do that, right?

Talking about the Paramount plus episode one YouTube channel for the academy show not the streaming service.

But the show fell out of the top 10 again. Tulsa King and Landman seem to be much more popular at the moment.

I'll wait for you to provide us with the exact viewing figures from paramount plus and not the youtube upload which is a restricted secondary option and then if this youtube reviewer does indeed have more plays than episode 1 has on paramount plus globally then you can factually say it has more views. It won't be a point that leads anywhere or fosters any kind of discussion but it will be a numerical fact.

I like the show so far, I am also not sure if Kurtzman can capture the Gen Z audience he wants. But we shall see
It'd be interesting to hear if the show's getting anywhere on TikTok; obviously its very early days but so far it does have the feeling of a group of millenial-or-older writers making something they think Gen Z/Alpha would like, rather than something those demographics actually would like.

I can imagine younger viewers latching onto specific characters, but not the tone of the show as a whole (judging entirely by the first two episodes, which is obviously too early to draw any major conclusions).

it does have that 'how are you going, fellow kids?' feel. I like what i've seen of the show so far, but it does have that feel of Gen X and millennial writers trying to anticipate what Gen Zs like.

Are Gen Z watching Trek? Who knows.

Prodigy was for the pre-teen market, and it was awesome, but it was mostly us old trekkers watching it. Not the demographic the Hagemans and Kurtzmans were hoping for

No, of course not. And, in other news, I have a bridge to sell you with an ocean view.

From my own anecdote, some are, most aren't.
And that's a shame.

TOS peaked at #52 in the annual Nielsens, and that was its freshman season. If current or relative "hotness" and "popularity" determined whether or not we follow Trek the franchise would never have lasted past 1969.
Indeed. Whatever popularity Trek had hinged mostly on TOS and some TNG. But, it's not a powerhouse.

yeah, ask the general person on the street, and if they know about Star Trek at all, they will say TOS or TNG.

Which may be why Paramount keeps milking TOS and TNG nostalgia (SNW and PIC S3 respectively).

I'm ready to give a chance to a new century and new characters (SFA).

I think Star Trek will just always be the unpopular nerd's franchise and it will probably never be able to escape that image just by virtue of the name attached. It'll always do okay for whoever owns it but it'll never enjoy the mainstream success Star Wars does.
