Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Yep, the aforementioned novel The Captain's Daughter by Peter David established Harriman's father was a high ranking and influential Admiral, John Harriman Sr, known by the nickname Blackjack. In the novel, Captain Harriman struggles with imposter syndrome, worrying he's only where he is because he's the son of a powerful individual, and the aftermath of Kirk's loss as well as a certain event depicted at the start of that novel reinforce his doubts. Blackjack, towards the end of the novel, in a moment when tensions between the two Harrimans come to a tipping point, angrily states that Captain Harriman wouldn't have gotten where he is without him and his influence.

Admiral Blackjack Harriman was also featured in Serpents Among the Ruins, where he's shown to be an even less pleasant individual than The Captain's Daughter presented him as, as when Blackjack is on his deathbed, he admits he's always considered Captain Harriman a disappointment.

I mean, John wasn't the best Captain in the universe but accidents and bad things happen. His father was too big an asshole. The fact he got to keep the Enterprise after Kirk is lost shows he had to at some point demonstrate he deserved to command the flagship of the Federation and stay in the Captain's chair. Starfleet would have replaced him pretty quickly had he not.

We need to see him in action again onscreen. Show how he went on to be another great Enterprise Captain.
