His father was an admiral.Didn't the novels have him get the position because of nepotism?
Or he thought it was.

Admiral "Blackjack" Harriman. His father was an admiral.
Yes.But was he wrong?
I mean, John wasn't the best Captain in the universe but accidents and bad things happen. His father was too big an asshole. The fact he got to keep the Enterprise after Kirk is lost shows he had to at some point demonstrate he deserved to command the flagship of the Federation and stay in the Captain's chair. Starfleet would have replaced him pretty quickly had he not.
John Harriman is basically Connor Roy and Blackjack Harriman is basically Logan Roy. Succession TrekYep, the aforementioned novel The Captain's Daughter by Peter David established Harriman's father was a high ranking and influential Admiral, John Harriman Sr, known by the nickname Blackjack. In the novel, Captain Harriman struggles with imposter syndrome, worrying he's only where he is because he's the son of a powerful individual, and the aftermath of Kirk's loss as well as a certain event depicted at the start of that novel reinforce his doubts. Blackjack, towards the end of the novel, in a moment when tensions between the two Harrimans come to a tipping point, angrily states that Captain Harriman wouldn't have gotten where he is without him and his influence.
Admiral Blackjack Harriman was also featured in Serpents Among the Ruins, where he's shown to be an even less pleasant individual than The Captain's Daughter presented him as, as when Blackjack is on his deathbed, he admits he's always considered Captain Harriman a disappointment.

Pretty random, but this is a very good way to get access to different ebooks on Libby... free streaming on Hoopla and Kanopy (Kanopy especially has good Criterion adjacent content)... Hoopla is also very good about having recent Star Trek comics from IDW...They have been issuing a lot of them since they became available last month, and the staff said they were the most popular card to be issued. It is good for 4 years and is free to California residents with a valid ID.

That could tie into the not seen for a long time character that was duscussed. I mean if it's a test about famous captains who better than Archer to be a subject?I wonder if we will ever get to read that original draft. Or maybe it became the basis for her Season 2 episode.
Late to this but I'm guessing that Stamets and Culber on the memorial wall was from the cover story that Discovery was destroyed in the 23rd century and all hands lost, and when Discovery showed up alive in the 32nd century they just never bothered to change it? Which kind of goes against Vance's claim that he never heard of Discovery in Disco S3 if they still had records of 2 of their officers being killed with Discovery (or he didn't even bother to do a basic database search).
Not keen on Nog listed as lieutenant, at least let him get to captain like STO did. I'm guessing he might've been killed in Vau N'akat fleet massacre in Prodigy.
Erica Ortegas and La'an being listed as lieutenants doesn't look good for Strange New Worlds honestly. Also, if they do die at the end of SNW, considering that Pike saw them alive in the Quality of Mercy timeline, Pike will then have to live with the fact that his "sefless" act to go through with the delta radiation accident gets two of his friends killed early. Although La'an dying in Starfleet service might be what helps trigger Khan's rampage in Space Seed when he reads about it on the Enterprise computer. It might also revert Spock from the rather chipper emotional fellow in SNW to the withdrawn, very cold, non-emotional guy at the start of TOS, so at least that explanation will be provided.
