Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

The Star Trek: Discovery Ferengi was okay for what amounted to a background extra. Picard season 3 has a better Ferengi who was actually a character. At least they were all better than TNG's version of the Andorians. It was great seeing them done much better on Enterprise.

Who’s complaining about the mere fact that they changed the appearance of an alien species, though? All I’m seeing is someone saying they preferred the older look of the Ferengi and the updated look from Picard to what they did with the makeup on Discovery. Is that so unreasonable that it needs to be mocked in this over-the-top fashion?

Yeah. I prefer the original look. I also preferred the TSFS/TNG version of the klingons. When they were changed in the first season of STD I wasnt happy. Their appearance, uniforms, ships and whole culture seemed different. Not sure what they were thinking. Maybe they wanted more alien looking klingons.

I looked it up on IMDB, and Glenn Hetrick is indeed the makeup head for Starfleet Academy. Which probably explains the continuance of his Ferengi design.

Oh well, can't win them all. At least they retconned his Klingons.

I just had a look at one of the previous trailers. The Ferengi seen briefly does seem to be wearing a make-up applied for more close-up work as opposed to the background mask we got last time, so while I'm not a fan of the design at least it will hopefully look okay in use.

And the "I Like Turtles" alien is still popping up. :D

My argument with changing the Klingons look has mostly been from the fact that the TNG change has become iconic. At this point it would be on par with removing Vulcans pointy ears. I think you can change the look of established aliens if they are not as iconic. For example nobody really cares that the Trill all of sudden were given spots. While the bumpy foreheads on Romulans in TNG was dumb they at least kept the ears so it wasn't a major deal.

That is why if you want to make changes to the Klingons you got to do it more thorough clothing and give them new types of ships and weapons. Add new layers to the culture while not forgetting completely the warrior culture aspect to them. The fact that we are probably getting our first gay Klingon on Academy is a great idea IMO on how to do this. I have my doubts the show will be good enough to make this great idea work, but the idea of what they I think want to do is a good one.

I'm sure Frakes directed at least one.
If it's Star Trek related he's there.

I wish they woukd fire.the lighting person and the head of wardrobe. I can't believe in 1200 years we'll still be using old fashioned zippers and wearing hoodies. Sigh.

Hopefully by the 32nd century zipper technology will have advanced to the point where the zipper doesn't get caught on the clothing.

Probably not.
