Personally I would say nothing the MCU has ever done comes close to the quality of SNW.

Spock has always had comic relief scenes. Always. Hell TVH is Comedy Relief Spock: The Movie and TUC ends with his go to hell scene.

Spock has always been a romantic figure, Chapel was deeply enamoured with him before we knew why, Dax was all like Kirk who when she saw Spock in person.

I love Pelia so I have no argument that can't be clouded entirely in my own bias.

Genre hopping is SNW's identity to distinguish itself from being a carbon copy of what came before and with that comes experimenting with new genres to try out. It is just its nature.

Spock may always have been some things, but when he was those things, it was handled with much more class and dignity than SNW has been able to present.

Sorry, it just falls flat here.

And yes, I accept that many of these things may be 100% true. But it doesn’t mean I have to like them or look forward to them.

Please, for the future, I hope they continue to minimize

1. Flippant MCU inspired dialogue between the crew
2. Spock as comedy relief
3. Spock as romantic comedy material
4. Pela
5. Experimental “very special” episodes

And keep up the great work with:

1. Interesting sci-fi mystery adventures
2. Character development for the main cast
3. Competent disciplined professionals behaving like competent disciplined professionals
4. Focus on great characters like Pike, La’an, Una, etc

This week’s episode is titled “Human Best Friend,” and it has been described as “a romp.” It was written by Kathryn Lyn, who has also written for Star Trek: Lower Decks. It’s helmed by Yana Gorskaya, an Emmy-winning director best known for her work in comedy. Fun will commence on Thursday, August 6.

Um, no. The MCU didn't start this kind of crew arguing/bantering dialogue.

It dates back to the TOS. SNW is doing nothing 'new' to/for the Trek franchise here.

The sterile dialogue style was part of the Berman Trek era, and I hope it NEVER returns to ANY future Trek project.

I'll agree with Jonathan Lane's evaluation that one of the biggest problems with early Discovery was the lack of banter. It feels a little weird that we've gotten to the point that people are complaining that there's too much now. (I'm fine with the current level personally.)

And, honestly, it's not as though the Marvel movies invented jokey banter among series characters. See the classic "Thin Man" movies with Nick and Nora Charles, Steed and Emma Peel on "The Avengers," and indeed pretty much every sixties spy-fi series: The Man from UNCLE, Wild West West, the "Our Man Flint" movies, etc. (Except, arguably, "The Prisoner.")

Or, also predating the Marvel era, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its imitators.

Heck, I've argued since Day One that Lower Deck's comic rhythms and fast-paced patter owe a lot to the classic screwball comedies of the 1930s and 40s: "Bringing Up Baby," "The Lady Eve," "Arsenic and Old Lace," etc. Which is great fun if your ear is attuned to it.

Personally, I love fun, sparky dialogue, and prefer it to plain, prosaic, "professional" dialogue.

I believe it was pitched by D&D as another Rome. That show was pretty decent, but it really wasn't going for an explicit "peak TV' feel ala The Sopranos or Six Feet Under, but more the typical costume drama vibe with more sex and violence.

We're just two episodes in and I think Season 4 is already stronger than Season 3. I trust the writers and that won't change unless they give me reason to distrust them.
