Ermagersh, somebody made a bioweapon they can't control. "Did anybody try talking to it?!" Janeway- or Crusher-level bleeding hearts.
I understand the editing choices are to make it resemble a documentary in-universe. I don't really like the editing though. I don't really watch documentaries though; I prefer my non-fiction in written form so maybe the editing is perfect for a documentary in the 21st century.
Instead of threatening with, "Don't make an enemy of the Federation," Pike should have said, "The Federation values all life, including that of the Jikaru and of the Lutani. We will still support you, in ways that do not involve enslaving emotional beings."
Felt like a reporter's perspective of a standard TNG plot.
Oh, and Spock is still with La'an. Straight to jail.
A big stinker. I can see they tried to make a scifi story, but it just was bleh. And boring. 2/10.

Ya know, the reporter guy got it wrong. Starfleet aren't colonizers: The Federation establishes colonies on uninhabited and undisputed worlds. And famously cedes lesser planets as part of agreements between equal powers, giving rise to the second Maquis, so they're not staking a claim forever like the Gorn.
If the fellow dislikes the Federation, I'm guessing there's all sorts of places the Federation doesn't lay claim to (cf. every episode ever 'cept the bottle shows) for folks to join. The Federation seems quite willing to give up taxpayers, er, citizens when their values don't align (see aforementioned second Maquis).
