20 minutes in, feeling this episode a bit more, even think Wesley is kinda working as Jim Kirk a bit better... Almost. He still kinda looks and acts a bit too much like the Jim Carrey version.

But, yeah, liking this one. This is why I'm here.

Finally!! Finally! This is Star Trek for me, this is perfect, I love this episode so much it hurts. 10! I don't even care if there are some issues, it's 10 for the plot and the characters and the dialogs in my book.

Terrific episode! While so many people were complaining that SNW was a series of just 'gimmick-episodes', we get another pure ST-story after last week's incredible episode. I initially didn't love that there was no explanation for why the crew of the scavenger-ship did what they were doing (for centuries?), but like it was said in this thread before, it's probably intentional, it leaves you wondering... just like Kirk is at the end. All in all, incredible episode.

7000 people? How on earth did the 21st century make a ship that big? That was just beyond stupid.
An okay episode. Still not a fan of all this Kirk prelude stuff. It’s just not necessary. If they do feel the need for it, they should at least keep it as far away from the Enterprise as possible.

The bad guys reminded me of the Gri-Gari from The Fallen, if people remember that game.

Giving that one a 9.

There's things that.... Don't fit or make sense. Don't care.

Great episode, and feeling this Kirk a bit more.

I think the ship was heavily modified into a super ship with alien technology.

Basic V'Ger situation.

Or, ironically, probably closer to the Pakleds. The human colonists found an alien vessel and either looted it or got upgraded before proceeding to attack everyone else. If they were wild xenophobes ala the Terrans, they might have attacked the Enterprise and Farragut because they sensed aliens aboard and assumed humanity had become polluted.

Good episode. Nice tense stakes. Having a pre Captain Kirk where he's still learning his style was nice. Aliens where interesting till they just turned into another human offshoot. Reminded me of the colony humans from the litverse, the Neyel.

The suit the scavenger was wearing looked like it was modified from a different suit design than the one in that photo. Probably just no communication between the art and costume department
Or 200 years of repairing, scavenging, needing new suits

7000 people? How on earth did the 21st century make a ship that big? That was just beyond stupid.
A generational ship with that much time passed can't have 7k? The XCV-100 was probably smaller than the 330, so they started with not that many people, but then loved each other very much for 200 years :p

8 - Shockingly enough, overall a pretty excellent episode of Star Trek, but marred by a few things:
  • Silly groan-inducing Pelia stuff with the Atari and the phones. And the ship doesn't have any hardwired comms? I'm going to try not to think about it too much.
  • The Ortegas stuff that it eventually intersected with. Just bad and poorly executed. I am willing to accept any and all canon violations required to get rid of her and replace her with Sulu ASAP at this point. I FLY THE SHIP + quirky millenial wisecracks does not a character make.
  • The inexplicable Nurse Chapel ready to invoke the 25th Amendment on Kirk because he said he needed to clear his head. The basic idea of the scene, i.e., Kirk flailing a bit and needing to gain confidence is perfectly fine. The Enterprise crew ready to take over the ship at the drop of a hat on the other hand is just awful. Maybe if you had Dr. M'Benga over on the Farragut it would be a good start.
  • The intro was kinda wonky. The timing of the planet blowing up and Kirk wanting to be boots on the ground was just too TV-convenient. Then the "it's coming from that" without showiing you the "that". And then immediately after the opening credits the Enterprise is there shooting some asteroids. Very disjointed. Trim the Pelia nonsense and ya know... just throw in some basic scenes of Pike getting the distress call. Pike reacting to the distress call. Then the whole thing flows together and you've got yourself a 9 out of 10.
  • The bit at the end where Kirk's like "Fire phasers" and Spock's all "Yo dumbass our phasers kind of suck", "okay Spock well what do you got big dog" *fires torpedoes instead* was a little underbaked. After a quick rewind I get it, Kirk wanted to shoot the little chasey worms. Spock off camera tells him to target something inside of the gaping maw instead with torpedoes. I think they probably could have had a little more dialogue to connect the bridge scene with the SFX. Kind of the same problem the opening had.
But on the bright side:
  • The planet killer was kind of cool, despite the silliness of its big fat starship-gobbling face.
  • I liked the backstory for it. The twist is there for you to figure out at the right time before the actual reveal. They didn't try to overexplain it which I appreciate. Over the course of a couple hundred years things went kind of south and they had the technology they had and they were doing what they were doing. It's fine. I really hope they don't try and revisit it.
  • Everything on Farragut after the stupid Chapel knows best scene was pretty good. Spock and Kirk. The later interactions between Kirk and the rest of his future crew. All quite nice.
  • The aforementioned light touch on the matter munching vessel was good fodder for Pike and Kirk to have a little philosophical chat. More scenes like that one please.
  • Pike got to go around doing a little action stuff instead of being a massive metro wimp. His and Khan's sidequest to poison the umbilical were all perfectly decent scenes that gave them something logical to do to better their situation while Kirk and co. may or may not have been able to assist.
  • For that matter the stuff with being dead in the water ahead of the ship, turning Farragut into a tasty snack, tossing the nacelles aside to get the edge.... all good classic Star Trek stuff and well-executed.
Easily the best episode of SNW this season and... probably better than anything in S2 but to be fair there's so long between seasons and the overall quality of the show hasn't been there so it's possible there was another winner jettisoned out the airlock that is my brain, so to speak.

This is the first episode of the season I truly enjoyed.
Great to see a full–on Farragut adventure. Perhaps the ship can get a refit now where they add the rollbar from the concept art.

A solid Star Trek episode. :techman:

I continue to love star trek because of episodes like these which explore moral and humanistic subjects.

I found the ending interesting. Sad to see human explorers turning into murderers and scavengers but this has often happened to humans throughout history when they were forced to do terrible things in order to survive. For example, Cannibalism.

TBH, it is not hard to imagine humans doing evil things once they are out in space and are unable to return home. Look at The Expanse. The Belters were not afraid of murdering humans from Earth and Mars when it suited them.

This is my favorite episode of the season. Great bad guys that had one scary ship. Even didn't mind the tentacles. I knew Kurtzman would somehow bring back his beloved space tentacles somehow. The ending twist was very emotional . This felt like such a old school and classic Trek episode with a moral dilemma and a sort of examination of command.

It did bother me though we didn't see Captain Garrovick. It almost felt like they did it to just to troll old fans. They know fans would be excited at the chance to see Captain Garrovick in his first onscreen appearance and didn't do it for no good reason.

Ethan Peck has really grown into the Spock role and he and Chong's La'an are standouts in this show imo.

It was a good episode. I loved all the Kirk and Scotty stuff as well.

Wow. I've been waiting for an episode of SNW where I got the same excitement I once felt for TNG and DS9 and this is the closest yet. I wish we had this level of writing every week. This is the best episode of the season and perhaps of the series overall for me. It was tense, action-packed, well-paced, and had the right amount of humor. With the title I was expecting another Vulcan comedy episode, but I'm so glad they didn't do that.

Even though this felt like a sneak Year One pilot, they actually gave basically SNW cast something to do or a line. Pike got to be decisive, take action, but also was a wise mentor.

I spoiled myself about the Scavengers, unintentionally, but I really liked that twist and I hope its not the last we see of them. After last week and this week, SNW can make dangerous original enemies without relying on older Trek. I hope we get more of that.

I hope this episode is the beginning of a new direction for SNW, but I'm sure we'll get more whimsical "comedy" and romantic entanglements before long.

I do have quibbles, like I thought the Scavenger ship was taken out too easily, but they didn't dampen my enjoyment of this episode at all.
