I was 7 years old when TNG premiered. I watched all of TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise first run. I have seen every Star Trek movie in theaters since my dad and I saw The Search for Spock when I was 4. I’ve read novels, played video games, listened to audiobooks, poured over tech manuals, obsessed about canon and how it all fits together.

Since then, I grew the fuck up.

I know how it works. Your obsession with sizes of quarters and technical advances in our own world that make TNG make it look like it took place 40 years ago makes you not. The producers are trying to play to a 2025 audience as opposed to focusing on the thousands of fans (yes, thousands… that’s it) who actually care so much about the all powerful canon that they can’t realize their opinion is in the minority.

Exactly. When I first watched tng I thought wow look how far they've advanced since the 24rd century. Large quarters, luxurious ship, amazing holodeck. But SNW has ruined all that. They even have a more advanced viewscreen, briefing room and sickbay than the D. Frustrating to see them get this so wrong.

Honestly, I just chalk it up to artistic license.

The way I see it, STAR TREK is theater. Not every change in art direction requires an "in-universe" explanation.

It's art first and allows for creativity. Even historical dramas don't create things perfectly right.

And what about TAS’ “The Practical
Joker” where they had the Re-Creation Deck (which looked an awful lot like a holodeck and was referenced in the SNW episode) on the Enterprise?

Scotty was drunk off his 147-year-old ass and knew how to operate the holodeck pretty smoothly. That tells me that he still remembered the early stages of the technology and had a basic understanding of how to run even a 2369 version that was more advanced and efficient.

I saw this episode show up on YouTube, which surprised me. I'm waiting for the series to finish up before getting P+ again. But I started watching it out of curiosity.

Once they mentioned a holodeck, I DNF'd the episode. The teaser was painful to watch, and I didn't see the episode improving.

This episode was a complete stinker. How is Anson Mount so bad as his holodeck character? He might be even more disappointing than Scott Bakula. I thought both guys would knock it out of the park, but nope.

Who ever wanted a Star Trek show with a major focus on Spock's love life?

And while the Riker Maneuver was actually pretty funny... but why the fuck are they paying Kirk 3.0 to mock our beloved Bill Shatner? Insanity.

There was no attempt to make quality television here. This reeks of the writers wanting to be friends with the cast, "everybody let's just have fun" and the result is predictably awful.

Nah, they cut a decent trailer and have the show look good, people will get on board. Latest example: Battlefield 6. Everybody is hyped after a couple of missteps in the last few entries of the franchise. Why? Because they're actually listening to Battlefield fans, instead of arrogantly telling them what they should want. And they're seemingly executing on the vision. Still not sure if the final product will be good, but the vast majority of players are optimistic.

Heck, people were mostly sold on the SNW concept as far as I could tell with the caveat of some obvious reservations about spinning off of a total turd like Discovery. And then they threw out a trailer that led with Pike making a stupid effeminate face and saying "Hoiiiiiiiiiiiiiii" in his best SNL It's Pat! impression. Dislike "Nerd Anger" all you want, but let's not pretend there is more merit in uncritical bootlicking.

And the TAS Recreation Deck occupies a MUCH bigger room than the experimental one in SNW.

He told it that he was there to see his ship. Then he named it when asked. Does that really show any level of understanding beyond common sense? A drunk toddler could have done it.

(That's not to say I have any great problem with Scotty being familiar with holodecks or not.)
