It's not publicized much but Star Wars DID lose quite a bit of fans due to the infamous reboot. It's Star Wars and Disney so they can take those blows and still make a profit. Star Trek is niche and can't risk losing fans due to a reboot. Besides Trek just HAD a reboot with the Kelvin film series that has now stalled.
My take is that they think the Kelvin series showed that unless it's Prime Universe there'll be no behinds in seats, so they megaphoned out that SNW is Prime, and then hung canon out to dry. At this point, IDGAF any more. They can (and obviously will) do what they want with canon. I just want the individual episodes to make sense and be entertaining, which this one was not... to me. The problem is that they seem to be just cherry-picking popular aspects of TOS/TNG/DS9 (at least thus far) and then writing stories about how it happened BEFORE TOS... I mean, it's just not clever or cute anymore. It's just TEDIOUS.
