This one didn't quite work for me, the zombie stuff was bizarre and the culmination - Pike helps M'Benga cover up murder and Ortegas gets a slap on the wrist for risking a violent confrontation with the Klingons - was bananas, and I'm not sure it was intended to be taken as such. I always thought the Starfleet of TOS and TNG seemed too rigid and authoritarian, but this is a bit of a swing too far the other way for me!

The Klingon character was fantastic, at least; I wish the story had focused much more clearly on her. The zombies didn't really add anything and it feels like there was a better plot involving her somewhere in there.

I do think Pike's lack of authority could be a really valuable trait for the writers to develop intentionally. The best parts of TOS weren't scared to show Kirk as impulsive and quick to anger, Picard is a fascinating study of a sneering dogmatist (albeit unintentionally); Pike's critical flaw being that he's too sweet-natured and conflict-averse to make an effective captain could be a really strong plot thread to follow.

Hi BBSers,

My family and I like to watch new Star Trek together, but I always check here first to make sure there isn't anything inappropriate for a 10YO (like heavy gore, or upsetting themes like child death- for calibration, the episodes we've skipped are 1.6 [child death], 1.9 [extreme fear] and 2.8 [distressing gore/themes]).

Could the good folks of the BBS please give me a (spoiler-free) heads up if there's anything too much for this ep- thanks!
There's zombies and several deaths. A few people get ripped apart and some of the zombies get killed in "cool" ways like having their heads crushed. If you're trying to avoid gore it's probably one to skip.

Have to say this was a 6 overall, the plots just didn't mesh well. Zombie stuff felt tacked on. +2 points for the makeup and practical effects though.

Thought it was pretty good. Zombie stuff was whatever, but I’m not a fan of the genre. Everything else was rock-solid - and, since the Bytha twist turned the Kenfori story into something legitimately rad, that’s actually more than enough to turn the episode around for me despite it ostensibly being “look, zombies, hah”.

8, 7.5, and 7.5 for me this season. Solid showings. I’m digging season 3.

I like Star Trek and I like zombies Which means i love it when they mix the two.

However i was not a fan of the idea that Klingon warrior would go hunting for the human that killed her father who was also a traitor to the Klingon Empire. That makes no sense to me tbh. The Klingon Empire is not going to restore her family honour because her father was still a f**king traitor. The human who killed him would be seen in a better light by the Klingons because he killed a traitor, for whatever reason that he had.

Ghosts and other superstitions have been canon for decades.

Let's see, we got space vampires, space ghosts who haunt candles and diaries, space gorillas, space werewolves (that Wesley episode I'm too lazy to look up), the creature from the black lagoon as a cadet and about 50 episodes with the star chained up in a creepy dungeon at some point. I can't think of a space mummy episode tho. Oh, and Macbeth's witches.

Horror is definitely part of Trek DNA.

She has been discommendated, so there is no chance of any honor to regain. (at least as I understood it from TNG)

Uh, the tension was being outnumbered ten to one by creatures surrounding you ten feet away who want to eat you.

I dunno, it just felt dumb in execution. There's a lot more tension when you have things like say the clicker in TLOU, where they cannot find you if you stand completely still.

I also felt kinda like the whole access to phasers/disruptors thing made things a lot less frightening feeling than in your average horror movie. I mean, I get that in the script, they weren't that effective because reasons. But the typical trope in a zombie movie is people being unarmed, or having limited ammunition, or having to do a head shot to ensure one went down. Just having access to something which can instantly vaporize them makes the whole thing feel far, far less dangerous.

Hasn’t the whole planet been affected by the moss? That would mean there are zombie flies out there and they could be bitten without knowing.
Hopefully they were in quarantine for a few days.
