"Another thing that makes canon a little confusing. Gene R. himself had a habit of de-canonizing things. He didn't like the way the animated series turned out, so he proclaimed that It was non-canon. He also didn't like a lot of the movies so he didn't much consider them canon either. And -- okay I'm really going to scare you with this one -- after he got TNG going, he... well... he sort of decided that some of the original series wasn't canon either. I had a discussion with him once, where I cited a couple of things that were very clearly canon on The Original Series, and he told me that he didn't think that way anymore, and that he now thought of TNG as canon whenever there was conflict between the two. He admitted that it was revisionist thinking, but so be it."

Oh, that is infinitely worse than George Lucas and his original trilogy tinkering. Insane the disrespect Roddenberry had for TOS (and TAS but that’s not as sacrosanct to many fans). He was not a well man physically or mentally by that point, some claim drug addled, so I don’t take Roddenberry’s fits of decanonisation at all seriously.

Maybe but Edosians have their third arm on the front. She had it on the back. Plus her face didn't quite look like one.

We saw one Edosian in TAS and, very often, Arex's centre arm just hung loose. The way this new one moves, it seems like the whole torso can spin. So why not!

And her orange, angular face looked as Edosian as necessary, considering makeup changes to Andorians, Tellarites, Tiburonians, Romulans and Klingons over the decades.

I don't think the episode necessarily makes it canon that Trelane is related to Q, especially as it didn't even confirm that it was Trelane...

"Tally ho!"

Lower Decks has had a few as well. Chances are she is, but there is a small possibility that she could be a different species.

Yeah, no. This was a struggle.

Roger Korby is now Colin Farrell (or his younger brother) but he's not bad. The sudden accent threw me off.

Really don't like this version of Spock.

Uhura knows 500 languages but by the time she's 60, she still won't have gotten around to Klingon. Writers really like giving her superpowers she never had before.

Time jump glosses over Ortegas' injury. I really wanted to explore her emotional fallout to losing some digits and being fitted with replacements. I get that she's struggling but a pilot losing most of her hand should have been a major issue and a wonderful opportunity for Erica. Nah. No time for that, we need hijinks.

So yeah Akiva Goldsman (Batman & Robin, Lost in Space) apparently says that was actually Trelane and his father was Q and not just voiced by John Delancie as an Easter Egg. They bring in the fan/tie-in idea that Trelane is a Q. This is really just an expensive fan film series. This cast deserved better.

Christina Chong and Celia Gooding are the only reason this episode got a 2 rather than a 1 from me. They're marvelous. But that's 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back. Oh wait, it was only like 48 minutes?

He reportedly was into marijuana and psychedelics in the '60s and '70s, but there's no credible evidence that he was "drug addled" in the TNG era. The decline in his health was entirely physical, not mental. He had developed a monumental ego and totally bought into his own press releases, but he was in full possession of his faculties up until the day he died.

He did too much LDS.

Does this add more spice to the speculation and fan theories? Sure . But nothing we saw in this episode should add /change the Q or Trelane entry in the Star Trek Encyclopedia or Memory Alpha as narrative canon.

If that's the case... what exactly was the point of it? They kinda pined after each other for a season and a half, Spock left his fiance to be with her, they were together for I think two whole episodes where they both felt weird about it, then Chapel decides to leave. They seemed like they were going to be together after Spock saved her in the finale, only for her to still say she was going to leave, then she returns with a new boyfriend this episode.

I'm really not sure what the writers exactly had planned with these characters, especially when they're (I think) the only two TOS characters whose romantic partners we actually know about. We know Spock will be engaged again to T'Pring (for all the good that does) and that Chapel will marry Korby and he'll become an android. It's just a strange choice and I'm not sure why they pursued it.
She never married Korby.

Peck Spock is Best Spock.

So I'm assuming Federation Day is sometime in January or early in the year? Because otherwise we'd have literally no episodes in 2260 which is really strange (the Rigel episode was still in 2259 because of the '5 years ago since the Cage' dialogue)

I'm totally here for the messy La'an/Spock/Kirk love triangle
Spock's romance days are not over, yet. Spock still needs to meet botanist Leila Kalomi on Earth ~6 years before the TOS episode This Side of Paradise. :vulcan: Depending on the timeline interpretation for TOS, this is coming up soon. Apparently, Spock gets out of his romantic rejection emotions dilemma by embracing his Vulcanian side in the near future.
ELIAS: You've known the Vulcanian?
LEILA: On Earth, six years ago.
ELIAS: Did you love him?
LEILA: If I did, it was important only to myself.
ELIAS: How did he feel?
LEILA: Mister Spock's feelings were never expressed to me. It is said he has none to give.

The exact line in WNMHGB is that Kirk arranged to have Mitchell serve with him on his first command. Whether or not Mitchell was the XO there is an argument that no one has ever been able to solve, even the tie-ins can never agree on the matter.
Dehner says in WNMHGB:
DEHNER: I know those from your planet aren't suppose to have feelings like we do, Mister Spock, but to talk that way about a man you've worked next to for years is worse than
Gary Mitchell needs to get on the Enterprise before Kirk takes over command of the Enterprise. This implies that Kirk's first command will not be the Enterprise; he still has a few years to be promoted to full Commander and perhaps get the command of a lesser vessel (USS Saladin Class?) In this scenario, shortly after, Gary Mitchell then transfers to the plumb navigator assignment on the Enterprise (replacing his ex-wife Jenna Mitchell whom they meet in Starfleet Navigation classes?).

I didn't like this episode very much, but I gave it a 4 for the La'an dancing :adore:. (BTW, Spock really needs more dance lessons. :rommie:)

As much as I actually did like the character, I'll be happy if we never see Korby again and make his disappearance the the next time he's even brought up.

To twist the knife, Christine should come to realize that she still loves Spock only for Spock to recommit to to T'Pring after his time with Leila Kalomi before she has a chance to say anything, which results in her laser focus quest to find Korby. This sets up The Naked Time, What Are Little Girls Made Of?, Amok Time and The Paradise Syndrome perfectly.

As for my episode rating, I gave it a four as well. In my opinion, it was Strange New Worlds first legitimate dud.
