Yes it does. It made you feel something real, and it wasn't just another 'Red Shirt of the week' death.

It WASN'T done to satisfy 'teh canon'. <-- Which was your point.

Whether I grieved over Hemmer’s death or didn’t give a shit (like I doubt I’d give a shit if Ortegas died), still isn’t the point. And if my point hasn’t been made with you about this by now, it never will.

Yep. Senselessly killing off a great character to satisfy 'teh canon' is the reason why I hate prequels so much.
What's the canon connection? Hemmer could have remained CEO up to the point Scotty took the job. No "canon" reason he couldn't .

He was killed off because that was the plot. Of course he could still be alive and Gorn free on "Not-Hoth" for plot reasons too.

The character had to have an artificial plot-driven exit to make way for Scotty. Just like Pelia will have to do, but I don’t give a shit about her character. And your fav Ortegas will have to exit to make way for Sulu. Of course, what you personally think of that is your own opinion. But for me, it was annoying that they felt they needed to kill Hemmer off. I didn’t think it was at all necessary, even to the plot.

Scotty's age and rank for this time period is consistent with Vulcan's Glory, a TOS novel set during the Pike era from the 80s written by DC Fontana.
That's interesting, although it may be that year was fudged in editing. I recall the First Adventure novel listing Rand's age as 16 when it was blatant from Charlie X that she was way older. The Lights of Zetar also made it clear that Scotty was way older than Romaine.

What source led to the ages of the main characters being canonised on Memory Alpha?

Eh, Scotty doesn't have to show up for years, so I doubt It was for that reason. I expect all the nonTOS characters will make an exit between now and the end of season five. I'm not particularly bother by the notion. I can only hope that their exits are well handled.

Hemmers's death was pretty standard stuff, kill a character to show the enemy is "serious". Hemmer got the short straw. Perhaps if they knew how popular Hemmer would be they might have changed their minds.

They tend to go with the ages of the actors unless something concrete is mentioned in an episode.

Sometimes a death is just a death.

It's a dramatic storytelling trope that Trek has used a lot.

You are absolutely welcome to your opinion. I stand by mine that I find it annoying that creative choices are dictated by a 50 year old show.

When they killed off Airiam on Discovery, everybody was like, "why should I care, It's a character that they didn't develop and I know nothing about?"

So they give everybody exactly what they were asking for, and they still bitch and find reasons to be mad. It just goes to show that you can never please anybody and you should never cater to people who can't be pleased. It's an exercise of utility

Perhaps the actor didn't want to keep wearing the makeup longer term? I just thought it was a decision to help develop Uhura's journey towards self-belief.

Utilities need exercise?

There's nothing in TOS that says that Hemmer had to die, or that Pelia has to die. Plus they chose to kill him off in season 1, years before TOS, and replace him with another chief engineer who isn't Scotty, so it doesn't seem like continuity had any influence on his fate.
