I love that version. Nice to see someone finally posted it since we've had the blu ray for, what, ten years now? OTOH give me 24fps or give me death. Otherwise it looks like a soap opera. (And not in the good Buffy / SNW way.)

I never realized how similar Gary is in that opening to Pine's Kirk in 09.

Re-watching the bridge fight and I remember thinking at the time how much I miss Star Trek phasers. When she shoots and it just goes "plink" instead of a sustained beam it's not nearly as satisfying.

I, too, miss the blue beams of satisfying disintegration. The Mugato and the Salt Vampire didn't stand a chance in TOS. These little gornlings should not have been anything more than an annoyance, to be phased completely out of existence at the touch of a button.

Who knows what Starfleet thinks is unsuitable for civilians.
And the majority of the Maquis crew had previous starfleet training; having either washed out in the academy or left the service at a relatively low rank.

Most of the Maquis who left Starfleet (that we see, anyway) were Lt. Commanders... Hudson, Eddington, Chakotay, and the one Ro talked about in "Preemptive Strike". I wouldn't call that a relatively low rank.

Enough time in the service to look past all the Starfleet propaganda they learned in the Academy?

I wouldn't say that.

Eddington was playing out his fantasy of being a hero. Chakotay left to fight in his father's name, so that was more of a personal reason.

Hudson... he got really close with the colonists, so he's the only one that I might agree with you on that.

Which sounds like Kirk's description of the mission at the beginning of the un-aired version of Where No Man Has Gone Before.

Of course Pike's opening narration ALSO says "Five Year Mission". So flip a coin.
Sped out of the Galaxy and then limped back to Federation space.
Kirk: Had enough of “deep space”. What else you got?

I was thinking about what Riker said in the Pegasus, how he only sided with his Captain because he was fresh out of the Academy. "I was seven months out of the Academy, my head still ringing with words like duty and honor." Everyone might leave for their own reason but they would only realize it was a cause worth fighting for once they can see past Starfleets official position on the Maquis.

I was referring to Voyager.
I don't think Be'lanna was a full LT when she left, and Paris was a LT. A few of the ones you see on voyager were just "crewmen"
Chakotay's pre-Maquis rank is never made clear IIRC, Janeway gave him a provisional LT-CMDR since he was her XO.

My head canon is that the Enterprise was on a different mission (exploring the edge of galactic space) and was not going to part of the Five Year Missions around "local" unexplored space - that was other heavy cruisers. Then the barrier kicks their butts and nerfs the Enterprise. They have to fix her up anyway and now she's available. She's refit to "Starship Class" standards and ta da! Star Trek!

Of course this was before SNW told us that the Enterprise was ALWAYS legendary. Ah well. Tiny price to pay for SNW.

For a “Deep Space Mission” they sure spent a lot of time within Federation borders playing ferry boat, space cop and border patroller:lol:
Some of the colonies were effectively deep space. Exo-3 was clearly so far out it was only visited every few years. A number of other colonies only got annual visits. The federation was so large that the borderlands were mysterious

Who knows what Starfleet thinks is unsuitable for civilians.

And (not to reopen the whole debate) Starfleet exhibits military traits, it does plenty of non-military work as well, which would make it easier to include non starfleet, civilian members into it's crew on occasion.
Yes I think there is evidence of civilians working on vessels - Richard Daystrom, Leah Brahms etc but they are on assignment rather than a tour of duty. There's no evidence at all to suggest that any members of the regular crew are non-Starfleet under normal circumstances, except for SNW Chapel, and that was probably just to cover off the fact that canonically she only joined Starfleet to trace Korby. In times of war, its understandable that use of civilian support staff might become a necessity. Starfleet couldn't churn them out fast enough.

Robert and Nancy Crater had been on planet M-113 for five years at the time of "The Man Trap(TOS)" and maybe had just one cargo and medical run visit them between first arriving and the Enterprise showing up.

Torres never graduated the Academy, and Tom was cashiered out of Starfleet before he joined and was arrested on his first assignment as a Maquis.

And the rest of the Voyager Maquis, no others were established to be ex-Starfleet.

Exo-III wasn't a colony. It was the site of an archeological expedition. Korby was last heard of five years prior to the episode. There had been two missions to Exo-III prior to Kirk's, who had no luck finding Korby. We've no idea where Exo-III is in the Galaxy. Though this does beg the question, if Korby's last known location was known, why did Chapel join Starfleet to find him? Did she know Exo-III was on the Enterprise's itinerary?

Did they? Any evidence of that? The Enterprise usually only shows up is when a colony has a crisis. Famines, neural parasites, Berthold rays. and the like.

Like Korby on Exo-III, the Craters were on a scientific expedition, not setting up a colony. Even the Starnes Expedition was on Triacus for scientific research rather than setting up a permanent settlement.

It took Robert Crater years just to cycle through a shipment of salt tablets. Two people living alone in a research outpost on a distant, arid planet took some guts.

In "THE MAN TRAP", Kirk did quote a regulation that an expedition gets checked by a starship doctor once a year. While that may not apply to colonies, this establishes the potential for colonies being checked, too.
