I guess one possible explanation for the slow moving Gorn that Kirk fought is that species slows down the older they get?

Let's be honest, that is the most unconvincing fight in the history of cinema. Why they chose to film it like that or not at least speed the Gorn movement up in editing is beyond me. A six year old could have ducked those Gorn's punches.

Even Lorca had a TOS-style Gorn skeleton in his private lab. So we know that even in streaming/Kurtzman Trek that Gorn design still exists. These are probably just from a different subspecies of Gorn or, like implied above, as they get older they grow slower and lose their tails.

This morning I couldn't even get to the Paramount logo in the Fire TV app--it kept crashing. I watched it on my laptop. If I knew for certain the new streaming episodes would eventually come out on Blu-ray, I would cancel my Paramount + subscription.

Yeah, it was being awful for me too.

A 10 and then, "To Be Continued" ... Dammit!! A proper cliffhanger, I'll give 'em that.

Scotty was one of Pelia's best students who got some of the worst grades. Sounds about right

I thought she said on of her best students who got some of her worst traits, ie he doesn't play by the book

Everyone was moving slow in that fight. I guess because zero gravity or some shit.
That was the only reason Spock and Chapel had a chance.

To be fair the arm movements thrown by the 1967 Gorn could be dodged by a six-year-old. Maybe this was intentional? TOS Gorn appeared to have sluggish arm and hand movements so this one did, too?

My guess is that zero gravity affected how well anyone on the Cayuga bridge could move about.

10. Engrossing from start to end, well, intermission?

Physics comment: Cayuga is dead in space, why is there gravity? Should be debris and bodies floating, not all on the floor.
It's been mentioned how artificial gravity tends to be persistent even when the ship loses power.
I think I remember reading somewhere that the grave plating uses very localized generators that work with near frictionless extremly high spinning gizmos. So, if the gravity field is generated as long as this thingies keep spinning, it should be fine. In the more destroyed sections like the bridge the gravity field was lost.

The scene where Spock and Chapel floated out of the ship and appeared to be stationary in space while the saucer was already in basically free fall toward the planet stood out to me more.
Those EV suits must have some serious thruster capabilities to resist the planet's gravity, once they broke orbit.

Solid, though not quite hitting the same levels as S2's best. I do not find the Gorn a particularly interesting antagonist. I hope the S3 premiere wraps things up on that front and we can move on.

Might not be a 10 / 10 episode, but it's a 10 / 10 season.
I think this episode started seeding development for the Gorn, giving them motivations and more complex behavior. Let's wait out the conclusion of the story before judging. :)

Not a huge fan of Chapel being the only survivor on the Cayuga. Its OK for our heroes to be lucky, but this was a bit much.
But was she the only survivor? It is not like if they looked for any survivors.
They could be more than Chapel... I guess...

As for the episode, as someone already mentioned, if you switch your brain off you can watch it. Like most of the season I am afraid.

It was a point in "Arena" that the Gorn are incredibly strong but slow moving reptiles. It's like fist fighting an alligator... you can outrun it, but don't let it catch you.

So first we have people saying that Paul Wesley is too old to be a 26-year-old Kirk and now we have folks who think the new Scotty actor is too young-looking to play a 37-year-old Montgomery Scott.

Both of those things are true.

I'm working my way through my thoughts and feelings on this episode. The special effects once again look great. I'm glad we did get to see an adult Gorn, which seemed more inspired by the Kelvinverse video game version of the species (though I liked those designs much better and just wish SNW had just taken those). With an episode titled "Hegemony" I was hoping to learn more about the SNW Gorn, though with this ending in a cliffhanger perhaps we will get more exploration of them in the second episode. Perhaps Kirk's inclusion on the landing party will get more of a payoff too in the second episode. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Farragut showed up to help out next season.

The episode did surprise me that they didn't kill off Marie who I thought was a goner. I was pleased with the introduction of Scotty. I liked the Gorn space suit and also seeing a larger Gorn vessel that looks more like it could destroy the Enterprise.

Overall, I thought this wasn't a bad episode, but not one of my favorite Trek season finales. I thought the last scene with Pike made him look more indecisive than having me on the edge of my seat.

Hopefully next season they flesh out the Gorn and give us more of a why. I think that would make them better antagonists. I don't think I'll ever be okay with SNW using them, but now that they have, I would like them to do more to make them make sense in terms of being a spacefaring power.

I'm literally the LAST person who should be commenting on a character looking young for their age, but this actor looks a bit too young for Scotty. But that's a minor, minor nitpick.

I watched this episode straight through overnight while I was super-super tired. I didn't stop it in the middle to do something else, unlike a couple of other episodes.

I liked the courtroom episode, got a kick out of the LD episode, and have liked what I've seen of the musical even though I haven't gotten back to it yet... but I'd say "Hegemony" is my favorite episode of the season. I'm not big on the Gorn themselves, never have been, but everything else around it just sold it.

I went into this season thinking it would just be a by-the-numbers standard Star Trek series. Diminishing returns. TNG wasn't as good as TOS, VOY wasn't as good as TNG, ENT S2 was dull dull dull and wasn't as good as VOY, so I expected SNW -- a return to Traditional Trek -- to keep the pattern. But they've really thought outside the box with some of the episodes this year.

They haven't killed off Batel...yet. Maybe Christine can save her with some really bold experimental treatments but I'm still getting the feeling she dies in the Season 3 opener and that will send Pike down the path of not getting romantically involved with anyone else until his accident.

I'm not sure I liked the hesitation at the end by Pike. I hope it's not going to be a plot point and was only done to get on our nerves and to accentuate the cliffhanger.
I think it's a VERY logical hesitation.
He wants to save people hostaged by Gorns but also realises that it's a dreadful risk for the rest of his crew.
He has an order to avoid starting war with Gorns. But he also knows that two attempts to behave peacefully with aggressive aliens (Georgiou with the Klingons and his own future version with the Romulans) ended in horrible wars.
I only want to say that I deeply empathize to Pike's hesitation. It makes me really love him.
