...Not sure why but Uhura giving the order to fire and it being followed without question felt off. That felt a bit out of character Ortegas to just do it without a, "Sir?" to Pike.

If you watch the scene, Ortegas does not immediately fire torpedoes. As soon as Uhura gives the order, there is a pause and if you look at Pike he gives a look and a nod, and it's after that nod that Ortega's lets loose the photon torpedoes.

Making Pike a fleet captain felt like a canon check mark just so Kirk could be in the episode

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a last minute addition to the script after someone remembered menagerie

Aren't torpedoes fired from the helm console? Like they will be in TOS? La'an has a side station at Security. You may be right, I'll concede that.

No actor owns a role forever. That's how acting works.
That's very true. I agree with everything you wrote. However, having preferences of one portrayal over another, and even disliking some portrayals is absolutely fair. I like Connery's Bond more than Moore's.

I want to like Wesley as Kirk. I really do. He's just not working for me yet. Although, maybe some of that is because he's playing a younger Kirk. Not sure. I guess time will tell.

Right now, I much prefer Pine's portrayal of Kirk over Wesley's.

There were a couple of times where Chekov fired phasers and or photons from the navigation station (because Sulu was off being a Green Beret ;)); but he could be right. I assumed they were fired by Ortegas because in the past she has been the one firing the weapons of the Enterprise.

TOS could be all over the map about which station did what defensive function so I guess La'an could have fired weapons from her side station. That's a pretty TOS thing to do.

I still can’t reconcile the two versions; SNW T’Pring is likable and I don’t want her to turn into that Machiavellian hellcat. :wah:
In TOS, we see her in a very limited, specific context. She's barely even a character. In Amok Time, she's come up with a plan with a specific goal, break the engagement with Spock and be with Stonn. According to Vulcan culture, there are only certain ways to do that. So, her options were extremely constrained. She might've been experiencing Ponn Farr as well.

I love how SNW have given her real characterization and motivations.

Destroying one piece of equipment to prevent loss of life is sufficient. Then you reevaluate, determine what harm was done and take steps to rectificy the situation.

This is one piece of equipment against several lives.
Yeah, it's really a fucking no brainer. Blow the stuff. Save lives.

Not a bad ep. Fortunately, I hadn't noticed the episode title, so I had a mystery for a while.

Uhura shone in this episode as did Kirk. Wesley's Kirk is really coming into his own now. And the sibling rivalry between the Kirk brothers is amusing.

Less amusing - Pelia. I'm just not warming up to her.

The romance. WTH Christine? Longing gazes all feckin' season and finally you get him and meh? What is WRONG with you? And given how Chapel moons after him in TOS...I just wanna bang my head against a door or something. It would have been nice to have had a week or two of niceness before the inevitable breakup/return to T'Pring.

Like most, I'd like to see more Pike.

Hemmer, good use of the character.

A nice solid episode. I'm not so sure about the crossover, because as much as I like Lower Decks, I'm not sure how that bunch of clueless funny losers will fit in the "real" Trek world. Stay tuned, I guess.

Not amazing but a pretty good episode -- mostly a character piece, really. I really like the idea that the first person Jim really bonds with isn't the obvious pairing of Spock -- it's Nyota. There was a nice parallel between Prime Jim and Prime Nyota meeting for the first time at the bar in the Enterprise mess hall and Kelvin Jim and Kelvin Nyota meeting for the first time in the bar in Riverside; Prime Jim is much more mature and so his meeting with Nyota isn't so disrespectful and sexually harassing.

I really like the idea that when realizing that their utilization of a scarce resource is causing tremendous damage to other lifeforms, Starfleet's first response is to just stop. It's a much more optimistic take than what tends to happen in analogous situations in real life today.

Gooding continues to be wonderful as Nyota, and it was great to see Bruce Horak again.

I loved the scene between Jim and La'an. Very charming. I hope we see La'an open herself up again.

Pretty good episode. Just like the episode about Rigel a few weeks ago, very TOS like. Certainly a step up from last week…imo. However I did think the Pelia/Una conflict stuff felt kinda tacked on.

I’m still iffy on Wesley-Kirk. He seems to get a bit better each time he’s on. But for me, there is still just something off. The fighting death speech was pretty good though.

I get the feeling they are going to set it up as the crewmates not receiving the Spock/Chapel relationship well. “Like…we are happy for you two but it seems kinda fucked up that you’d break up a marriage.” Optics could also be why Christine wants to keep it under wraps.

“I only said that because he’s dead”. Ha!

If it’s a temporary thing, why would Pike still have to wear the fancy badge? Feels like it’s just a super cheap way to get around that line from The Menagerie.

It seems weird to me that both the Kelvin timeline and now nu-Trek keep pushing Kirk and Uhura together on a more personal level instead of just the Captain/subordinate relationship they had during TOS. It’s because of the kiss isnt it?

put me down for a 8/10.

I quite enjoyed this episode. And I don't know how I didn't notice it before, or maybe they changed Sam Kirk's hair or something, but he seemed hotter than I remember, somehow. lol
