Wesley finally won me over with this episode. I still can't see him as Kirk (like I can with the other recast characters), but he's doing a good job with what's written. I really think he should have just been a new character, but they probably figured they had an opportunity to show Kirk and Spock meeting or maybe have Kirk take command at some point at the end of the series.

I think I know what SNW episode works for me -- mind-bending stuff and raw emotions. It worked for me with Among the Lotus Eaters and it worked for me in this episode. I love the focus on Uhura's grief for Hemmer and how communication plays a key part but not before all the mind-bending horror happens (with another sound cue on top of it). This episode gets top marks from me!

TOS could be all over the map about which station did what defensive function so I guess La'an could have fired weapons from her side station. That's a pretty TOS thing to do.

The TOS movies were consistent with this as well. You had the "weapons console" on the refit bridge, but we see Sulu firing most of the Enterprise's shots from the helm console in TWOK. Yet, in the same movie, the final barrage against the Reliant was keyed from the "weapons console."

In TSFS, Kirk orders Scotty to fire the photon torpedoes from the navigation console.

There's a tactical station right behind the captain's chair in TFF, but Scotty uses the communications console to raise and lower shields during the emergency landing sequence. It seems Chekov fires the torpedo at the God Creature from the navigation console (based on Kirk's "Send it down now, Mr. Chekov!") in that same film.

I also always like how Joachim moves from "helm" to "weapons" during the Reliant's initial sneak attack.

In Star Trek VI, it looks like the torpedoes are fired from the helm console, using a "Mode Select" button.

Good stuff.

The two stations to Spock's left were Assistant Navigation and then Weapons and Defense. I think La'an is sitting where the Engineering / Environmental stations will be? Of the many pieces of Star Trek minutia that I will be scrawling on the walls of the rest home, the stations on the Enterprise bridge will oddly not be one of them.

Yeah, all stations are user configurable so if La'an wants to fire phasers from Environmental she can. They made this explicit in TNG but it's true in earlier eras as well.

Good thing the transporter beamed slightly slower than normal to give time for the camera to pan up.
It's like how Darth Vader's lightsaber clearly has a "dramatic" setting.

Second favorite line! "You want to talk to SAM, don't you?"

Jim really is the bratty little brother. No wonder he and Spock become besties!

Watching it again, the chess game with Spock and Christine is actually quite a good scene. It was a nice balance between "We need to know what happens next!" and "It's not the Spock and Christine show and we have other things to do this week."

It does make you wonder what Spock was doing during all of this.

Spock should have been able to "pick up" on the Bannon's Nebula lifeforms' communication, too, right?

Yeah, I do wonder what he was doing while everything else was happening. Stuff involving the other science division staff, I guess? Sam's not the only one who reports to him, right?

9. Would have given it a 10 but the title kinda spoiled the plot....
------------------

Ah I missed that because it is meant to be the helm that fires weapons in TOS. Nobody at the the security station ever did anything. I think the station was the other side of Spock.

To be fair to the folks who missed that in this episode, they haven’t been entirely consistent over the course of the show. Sometimes La’an fires the weapons and sometimes it’s Ortegas.
In 'Elaan of Troyius' Chekov fires the torpedos from the nav station.

Why? They weren't trying to talk to everyone but just specific people.
They were broadcasting. Both Saul Ramon and Nyota Uhura picked up on this. Someone with documented telepathic capacity should have been noticing as well...?

Is it wrong I don't even remember the exact details "Night Terrors"?
Space shit prevents the Enterprise crew from sleeping, which apparently caused the death of another ship's entire crew. Sole exception is Deanna, who has dreams in which she's floating. Floating dreams turn out to be aliens communicating with her. Solution involves technobabble and the nacelles. Crew sleeps. Audience already asleep.

Not necessarily. It could be something that Uhura and Ramon had in common, genetically. Sort of like how in STARGATE ATLANTIS only certain people had a gene that allowed them to easily use Ancient technology (until they were able to recreate this synthetically and have everyone assigned there be able to use the tech).

If anything, Spock's telepathic abilities might unconsciously have blocked any attempts by the aliens to speak to him.
